Ah, but they might have asked him to state it in those new, fangled kilometres. And he got confused.

Is he about to spin round and do a Clara Petacci impression? "Honed this one at Bullingdon, what"

On how "well suited" they are to being PM, Cameron scores 46%, Boris 36%, Miliband 31% and Clegg 23%.

Recent YouGov poll. They don't give the sample size so it's hard to gauge the reliability of it. However, people are stupid if they think Boris is suited to the job.

YouGov repeated the same questions again yesterday, and found significant improvement in Boris’s figures. On the control question of how people would vote if the party leaders at the next election remained Cameron, Miliband and Clegg the figures were CON 34%, LAB 40%, LDEM 10%*, if the leaders were Johnson, Miliband and Clegg the figures change to CON 37%, LAB 38%, LDEM 10% – narrowing the gap by 5 points.

For fuck's sake Britain, give your collective head a shake. Now I don't think he could keep his 'lovable' buffoon act up over the course of a general election campaign, but I find it incredible that so many people - even many of those on the left - are taken in by his schtick. This twat is a regressive, reactionary right-winger and that's all that counts.

I had Gaby Hinsliff - now the Political Editor of Grazia (har har) - telling me on Twitter that he's 'talented'. Perhaps by her standards, but not by anybody else's.

He is also the first politician to embrace the nation's obsession with celebrity and the logical conclusion to the style over substance cult which began with New Labour and Blair.

Do you not think that Ken was slightly guilty of that too?

Different league altogether. Ken got nowhere near to connecting with the sort of people who like Boris.

Dunno. I watched a documentary about Ken's campaign against Dobson and he was playing the 'genuine Londoner, not a party mouthpiece' card for all it was worth. But Johnson takes the entire maverick thing to a new level.

It says something about the London-centrism of the national media, and the importance of the capital that the mayor has become such a recognisable figure. Outside of London, what other council leaders or mayors have achieved such high profiles? Very few, and normally for all the bad reasons.
