John Sentamu's fall from grace with liberals shows that you criticise gay marriage at your perilQuote:
Pre-liberalisation, before the decriminalisation of homosexuality in the late 1960s, back when Mary Whitehouse types were influential, people tended to be judged by their attitude towards traditional institutions such as marriage and the family.
If you were pro-marriage, straight and wanted kids, you were Good – if you were anti-marriage, not perfectly straight or not particularly interested in procreating, then you were Bad, a deviant, possibly even mentally disordered. Today, such an elitist and narrow-minded judgement of an individual's worth, the instinct to check whether someone is properly conformist by finding out where he stands on marriage, is carried out by the so-called radicals rather than the traditionalists. Now it is the supposedly liberal classes who will shun you and ridicule you, question your reputation and even write you off as disordered, if you fail to kowtow to their favourite new institution: gay marriage. "Liberals" have become the defenders of narrow and conformist moral virtue, while their traditionalist critics are written off as deviants.
