The real problem is the change has happened subtly so we also have the group (usually older people) who still think of it purely as the rememberance symbol and who would probably baulk at it being used in the way it is by some.

And therein lies it's power as a nationalistic device. It is virtually protected from criticism owing to it's origins. It's the St. George's Cross all over again. Which other dearly cherished symbol will be next?

Tom Watson & Ian Hislop, could be an interesting team.

2 minutes in and Miranda Hart is precisely as wooden as you would expect.

Looks like Shitslop is going to dominate the programme by sniping at Tom Watson.

Not looking like a classic...

Didn't see it but reassuring to see I'm not alone in not rating Miranda Hart. I was under the impression she's universally admired as some kind of comic genius.

I thought Tom Watson came across well despite Hislop's silly quips about expenses. Unlike most politicians Watson is quite happy to take the piss out of himself. Watson's best line was when he said he was getting legal help for the private detective who had followed him for a week so that he could sue News International because they had underpaid him.

Really? She was the worse thing about Hyperdrive, and that's really saying something....

I wouldn't worry, you certainly aren't the only person who doesn't get the hype about her. I thought Miranda was just one long succession of annoying one-dimentional characters, unsucsessfull forced catchphrases and OTT scenes after another.

She is in danger of becoming an uncastable comic actor in anything else if she doesn't stop doing the same exact thing on every job she gets, and HIGNFY is a great example of that.
Those asides and stupid pratfalls (that she insist on repeating, despite the "joke" been over with first time) are just cringeworthy.

She's probably popular simply because she seems to be so likeable personally. People think she's lovely, and she probably is, really. I thought her show was fine - I actually quite liked the breaking the third wall stuff and ao on.

Tom Watson was funnier than Miranda Hart.

I don't mind her. I know the guests don't write the gags so I won't blame her for the fact that the second joke on the programme was about Prescott's weight. Ha ha ha.

Yes but Hislop and Merton still make good fun of them when the jokes fall flat, despite that (which is a bit rich I think, given the fact that it's no secret they don't write them themselves).

If as a host I was given jokes that I felt weren't good enough, I'd say so. Most of these panel shows do some prep beforehand, yet allow guests to work off the cuff as well.

Given that HIGNFY has seemingly reached TV institution stage now by been around so long, they could -despite been on the BBC- get away with a lot more than they ever try to now, so why not let the host and guests just go with it niw and again and see what happens?

After all, the comedians should be able to think off-script once in a while, so why not let them try it?

I don't understand this.

Miranda Hart leads comedy awards nominations
Miranda Hart Miranda won three prizes at the awards last year

Miranda Hart and Channel 4 sitcom Friday Night Dinner are leading the charge at this year's British Comedy Awards, with four nominations each.

Hart, who won three awards in 2010, is up for best female TV comic, TV comedy actress and the People's Choice award, while her show is up for best sitcom.

I don't think she's funny - that's my taste in comedy. But even given that, surely no-one thinks she's that good?
