Can anyone tell me why this "bank" is still called the "Royal Bank of Scotland"?

It's 56% owned by the ENGLISH taxpayer!!!

Just watch where the majority of jobs end up being cut - no doubt England will take more than it's fair share of losses.

US OPEN: Dismal Andy Murray demolished in straight sets by awesome Marin Cilic

No comments yet but I *think* that this could have some potential for delightful souls happy that Murray's a dismal failure because he's Scottish.

Britain's Andy Murray made it through the first few rounds.

Scotland's Andy Murray got knocked out.

You wait. It'll happen.

For pity's sake. For the avoidance of doubt, Susan Boyle's home is in Blackburn, West Lothian, IN Scotland.

You can just visualise the conversation in DM Towers:

Sub Ed: Are you sure Blackburn is in Scotland? Wasn't there a Beatles song about 4000 holes in Blackburn Lancashire?

Reporter: I dunno, doesn't everyone say she comes from Scotland?

Sub Ed: How about looking it up?

Reporter: No, let's just put down that it's near Scotland, no-one'll notice.

That's just weird. Even if they were confused with the Blackburn in Lancashire, that's not really anywhere near fucking Scotland. Soon everything north of Watford will be termed "near Scotland". It'd make more sense to call the home counties "near Europe", not that they will as their readers heads will explode.

With all the talk about kids failing the '3R's, maybe the Mail should brush up on its own, namely Research, Relevance & Readability

Worth a try though!

OTOH - here's something to bash 15,580 Scots about - that number of people gave their second vote to the BNP. That IS depressing; though to balance that out, I was listening to the Lothians list declaration earlier today. The crowd gave a cheer to everyone, even the Scottish Pensioners Party and the Christian People's Alliance with their few hundred votes, until we got to the BNP, and then they booed. The only lot they did boo. As long as that happens, fine.

I reckon that's about 1 in every 2,000.
Given their likely unionist brand allegiences they'll be high-tailing it to Carslile, Chelsea (or Larkhall) as soon as big Eck is inagurated.

I'm not at all bothered by which part of the country may or may not "subsidise" another- I live in Tower Hamlets which must be "subsidised". But the oil argument puzzles me. Someone in the FT was talking about it, and seemed to be suggesting the money went out of Scotland, fix that and everything's fine. Does he reckon oil producing countries always get all the money? Was he suggesting they might send in the navy at some point?

Part of the plan also seems to be to attract international firms to base themselves in Scotland. Obviously none of these international firms will be taking money out of producer countries.

Nobody's posted it, so I presume none of you could face reading through a long Quentin Letts whinge devoted to the, um, whingeing Scots. If I may offer a quick resumé:

— Some of Quentin's best friends are Scots, including his delightful nanny;

— Nonetheless, as a whole, they're a nation of ungrateful subsidised moaning anglophobes;

— Therefore if they're dense enough to vote for it, Quentin is happy for them to fuck off and play at being 'independent';

— They will, however, regret it because "Scotland has its whisky industry, some farming, oil-related technologies near Aberdeen and cheap-labour call centres" but bugger all else to support a population of pissheads and nomadic teuchters;

— All this is wrapped in jestful language: "the haggis hitting the fan", references to Braveheart and tartan and the Loch Ness monster, and use of the adjective "wee" (a more apt choice would be the noun "pish").

You should read the article, it really is a hoot. Also, Quentin Letts is a cunt.

In comparing the two countries, he neglected to point out our bowler-hatted, carnation-in-the-buttonhole, brolly-carrying, tea-sipping, warm beer-drinking, Yorkshire pudding-eating, I-say-old-chap ways here down south.

Perhaps he assumed we already knew about it.
