It was always going to happen. Once the games start and the Mail sees how popular they are, it'll have been the most pro-Olympics papers all along. A similar thing happened during Euro 96, when Scotland & Holland were due to play in Birmingham and the Evening Mail ran stories for weeks beforehand about everything from looting & pillage to benefit fraud. Then when the tournament opened and the city joined with its visitors in enjoying themselves, a Mail editorial line diktat of "no negative stories" was issued.

Looks like the turn-round in editorial stance is beginning to reach the front pages - http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article ... prise.html

It's taking some of the commenters a bit of time to catch up, though.

Arse covering. If it goes tits-up, they were right all along. If they go well, then it's a triumph of British pluck, bulldog spirit and other such shite over the (manufactured) difficulty.

Cynical and unpleasant.

If it goes right nobody does pageantry like us Brits, wave the flag and rule Britannia. If it's a cock up that's the public sector for you.

As I said earlier, it's the bastard child of Pascal's wager.

Be cynical, negative and pessimistic; that way you'll never be disappointed.

That's bollox about the Tube. There were certainly problems today, but they were due to (a) a power failure, (b) a signal failure, and (c) a fire investigation. Business as usual, sadly, and nothing to do with the Olympics.

And, leaving at 9.a.m., I travelled from Wimbledon into central London and back again later without any problems at all.

Every transport problem within 50 miles of a venue will be blamed on the Olympics.

Both BBC Radio London and LBC were reporting today that traffic had been pretty OK in London. Not according to the Mail, however, So far as they're concerned, it was gridlock. Dacre really doesn't care how blatant a lie he tells, or how easy it is to see through it, if it serves his agenda.

Some lovely comments on both of these, especially the second one:

And they're off... first athlete claims asylum: African middle-distance runner held after disappearing from training camp

So just the one potentially conflict-triggering fuck-up so far? Good stuff.
