Or have Hattie Jacques shove a bunch of daffodils up their jacksie.

In my experience, old school nurses so beloved of Mailites who have that matronly 1950s Hattie Jacques air about them are often incredibly rude to patients. Fortunately they are a dying breed, and the vast majority of nurses are polite, caring and compassionate.

"Bring back Matron" is all part of the common fantasy many (I suspect) older commentators have of nurses in general - they're either grim-faced dominatrixes ruling with a rod of iron, or pretty young things, played preferably by Shirley Eaton or Barbara Windsor, there for the titillation of the male patients. Essentially they believe the Carry On films were documentaries.

If those people calling for matrons are in their sixties or younger then they will have no experience of hospitals in the fifties except as children. Who would not be, I suggest, in a position to make much of a judgement on clinical or nursing matters.

So the whole paradigm, like the warm beer and cricket on the green fantasy island inhabited by John Major and those members of UKIP still capable of composing a coherent thought, is a construct, made up from old movies, folk myths and half-remembered incidents.

It is deeply worrying that so many people seem to exist in this fantasy island, and actually believe that they can go there in real life.

I can't wait 'til I'm old enough to reminisce about the noughties, when children respected their elders, common sense reigned supreme, the streets were clean and politicians were honest.

British grandmother seriously ill with rabies was sent home THREE times by her GP and A&E department before she was diagnosed

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article ... nosed.html

To be fair, rabies isn't exactly common in the UK so I'm not surprised it wasn't initally suspected. The story doesn't say if she mentioned being bitten by a dog when she originally went to the doctor. Not that that stops the commenters slagging the doctors off (as well as a few tossers claiming that because it happened in India and the woman is of Indian background, it's not a 'British' case  )

The early symptoms aren't that clear cut.

It can take between four days and 12 weeks to spread, so if patients are vaccinated in time they can be treated.Early symptoms of rabies include fever, insomnia, anxiety and sickness.

I'd certainly have insisted on vaccination in her position.

Go to your library and get the doorstop (1700 pages) that is the Letters of C S Lewis. Writing in the 50s, he goes on, and on, and on about the decadence of modern life and how much better things were when he was young in the noughties/20s of the 20C. I laughed a lot.

Oh yes, always been done. But i loved the fact that this was being written right smack in the Golden Age of godfearing young people who knew their place and whose idea of a hot night out was Bible class (allegedly).

How can the NHS possibly treat 1million people per day?

I wish I could explain to the idiots that Matrons were managers, you know the people we apparently need less off.

Yes, yes, buuuuuuut...

Matrons! Hattie Jacques!! Carry On films!!! FUNNEEEEE!!!! So they must have been good.

It's not the most reasoned or carefully researched argument in the world, but it's pretty much what the 'Bring back matron' argument amounts to.

Would these be in addition to the 5,000 + matrons currently employed in British hospitals?
