From the article

Quote:
A spokesperson for the East of England Ambulance Service said: 'It is normal practice for all ambulance services to dispatch highly skilled solo responders if they are closest to assess the patient and get immediate life support to them more quickly while another crew is sent for hospital transport and support.
'It is absolutely not true that a clinician cannot administer CPR on their own. The very reason why they are dispatched on their own is in order to administer CPR and other basic life-support to the patient in the quickest possible time as using solo responders means getting a trained clinician with full equipment by a patient's side quicker.
'There may however be times when it is in the patient's best interests for a paramedic to utilise those on scene to help with basic life support under their instruction while, for example, they are unpacking equipment or calling for assistance. Although this reason may not have been communicated to Mr Pearce.
'This of course does not mean they are not capable of carrying out all these tasks, simply that it makes sense to use support under careful instruction and guidance if it is available, although our staff would always respect someone’s decision not to get involved.'

So, generally just a sad story. She doesn't look like she was in great shape to begin with (on oxygen on a motorised scooter) , and CPR has quite a low success rate anyway (~5%). There's no real story here, no valid righteous indignation. It does sound like the paramedic got the family to do the compressions whilst she contacted for backup and maybe wanted to get something set up (drawing up adrenaline or something).

NHS workers took 15 days off sick last year... compared with just SIX in the private sector

Major misfire, judging by the comments:

hmmm here's a thought, maybe they are off more as they are constantly surrounded by sick people! . . . . ? ?

DM's hate of the NHS is unsettling now. Why don't you say your masters have made you do this and we'd understand. Or does the DM hate nurses, doctors anyone who works for the public. Want privatisation much?

Get off their back DM give them support not criticism!!!! My husband needed barrier nursing for 8 days due to the effects of chemo, if any of the nursing staff or Dr's who had cared for him had been unwell it could have cost him his life, as his immune system was on shut down.

I wonder if a DM reporter ended up in an NHS hospital today they would admit their occupation?!

Cancer costs Britain's economy £11billion a year in healthcare and time off work while sufferers fight the disease

If only newspapers devoted more coverage to finding a cure.

Not at all. You're perfectly within your rights to describe peddlers of such filth as exactly what they are.

Suffice to say that looking at cancer patients as a financial burden makes you a cunt of the highest order.

I'm sorry to hear that, Arnold. I hope it goes okay.

Have we fallen for the dogwhistle on this one? My guess is that the Mail's objective is to get the readers to say how disgraceful it is that cancer treatment can be costed in such a dry, heartless way. Every Mail reader knows someone with cancer, and every one would argue (quite understandably) that giving that individual the best chance to survive, and the best care in case of remission, would be worth however much it took. Only a boffin or an unfeeling, Orwellian (he gets namechecked in the comments) system could disagree.

The reality is, however, that we as a society are not prepared to pay for other people's care. I have the ridiculous good fortune to be on my partner's private health scheme. The treatment I get for MS is not available on the NHS because it's too expensive. I meet other people with MS who are experiencing the same kind of side-effects from their medication that I used to get, and it drives me into fits of rage that they can't have the same treatment as me because able-bodied taxpayers will not pay a few pence extra. Yet at the same time it's helped me realise that my health and my life can be costed — indeed, they must be. And that one day, somebody somewhere will take the decision that I'm no longer worth the money it takes to keep me out of pain. Unlike the Mailites, I trust that the decision will be taken by a qualified professional in good faith, and it will comfort me to believe that the money saved will be used elsewhere.

From a mail reader's family perspective it is only other, non mailite, families who are a financial burden on the health system.

Well that's my best guess at least. The mailite mentality does come across as "Me. Me. Me. Me. Ad nauseum".
