Sounds good to me. It seems the school recognises gender is a social construct and is happy to let their pupils express themselves however they choose.

Indeed.

Sounds a bit dreamy

True, but ask yourself - if Pete hadn't had Tourettes, or if Nadia had been born a woman rather than been transgender, would they still have won? Or would they just be ordinary boring contestants like the rest?

I know the conversation has moved on since this was written but I'd like to add my anecdotal .02, if i may.

During that series of BB I was living with a girl and her younger brother, who suffers from Tourette's. He was (and by all acounts still is) an extremely positive and well liked young man who was happy to make light of what could probably have broken many people. He used his condition rather than let it dictate what he could or couldn't do, and I think it's to the credit of the kids who knew him that they all thought he was wonderful.

Privately though, he would admit that despite being popular within a group of his peers, he hated the way people (perhaps understandably) were taken aback by his behaviour in public. In some cases, people's reactions were motivted by spite rather than unfamiliarity. One memory I hope I never forget is the look of leering satisfaction on the face of the driver who slowed down to allow his son of perhaps no more than ten years of age to wind the window down and scream abuse at us as we did his paper round. I could write about that for quite a while, but i won't.

When Pete won Big Brother, this had a tremendous impact on him . He said there was a noticeable decrease in the discomfort or fascination he would cause in queues, on public transport or whatever. In some cases, people even smiled encouragement when they recognised his tics for what they where. He wrote a couple of letters to Pete explaining the effect this increased publicity had on the way he could go about his life, and to the guy's eternal credit, he answered those letters, and they kept up correspondance for a while. This inspired him to go to university, and although I've lost contact, I'm told he's due to finish studying at Oxford next year (or possibly last year, but it's not important).

I don't watch the programme, and I'd be sceptical of anyone who says it's a deliberate force for good, but I can at vouch for at least one person who found it to be of tremendous value.

If this teacher ends up chasing a penis which is attached to a mouse's back, I will concede that Norah Nyreland (good name) has a point.

PM is just a cunt.

It's more of an "inversion" than an amputation. People need to learn what's what, but then they might learn some facts and that would never do.

"'I identify as a trans man, a faggy queen...': Warren Beatty and Annette Bening's son Stephen speaks about being transgender"

This was a video made for a transgender support website. It's made by someone who is confident enough to talk about their identity and the journey there. As such, it contains a lot of things (terms, behaviours, ways of thinking) that trans people would be able to relate to, but not the general public at large. Nor the Mail, who complain:
Quote:
Nowhere in the six-and-a-half-minute video is there mention of his famous parents.

Support video for trans people meets an audience it was never intended for. And so...

I hate this attitude. It's: Invisible people should stay invisible. I don't want to acknowledge you, therefore I'll carry on using my considerable stock of privilege to silence you.

Nobody can force Jay to listen to transgender people or make him attempt to understand. But that's not enough for him. He won't be happy as long as there are people trying to talk about issues that exist but do not concern him.

Another awful article: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article ... y-Act.html

Throughout the entire article, Ashlyn is referred to as a boy. She may have been born male, but she is definitely not. I presume in Mailworld, you have to physically have your balls cut off before you can even get to 'so-called-girl' status.

More incorrect pronouns and distancing 'quote marks':
Quote:
It is the first time ‘Larry’ has appeared publicly as ‘Lana’.

A Dacresque apocalyptic reaction:

Quote:
It's very sad that someone feels the need to do this or crossdress but what's worse is that the evil PC Brigade will campaign for this to be the norm and all men will have to wear frocks so this bloke and all the others aren't the odd ones out. Oxford has had to change the dress code because of a minority and others will follow. Always be nice to a minority but they should never rule over a majority.

she hasn't said shit, her transition has been common knowledge for a very long time and every film site i read has been referring to her using the correct name and pronouns for well over a year. this is just the first promo trail her and her brother have been on since then.

Men can wear skirts at Oxford University as academic dress code is changed to 'meet needs of cross-dressing students'

The dress codes haven't changed at all. What's changed is that students can now choose whether to follow the men's or the women's code.

Quote:
For centuries, the sight of Oxford students in their distinctive academic gowns has been as familiar in the city as its dreaming spires.

And that won't change either.

Quote:
Change in regulations the first in 1,000-year history

Well, women didn't graduate from Oxford until 1920. Something must have changed.

This is just stupid. Nothing should ever change.

must have been fucking difficult to enforce a ban on men wearing stockings and skirts in 1012 as well.

I don't get why some commenters are acting as if the sky has fallen in and their entire belief system has been attacked. It's as if they only thing that has ever given them any security in life is the knowledge that, at Oxford, men aren't allowed to wear skirts whilst taking exams. Whereas the reality is that, for most of them, it comes as news that there was any rule at all about exam wear.
