I have been doing it wrong then. At school we had to determine the magnetic poles using iron filings and white paper, then stick it in Cholmondley-Smythes (pronounced John Smith of Birmingham) of Astons arse.

Presumably if he spun clockwise the positive pole was further up?

We used to do something similar to Sanderson of 3C.
