I think I hear the distant clip-clopping of a DM hobby-horse on the horizon with this one.

Quote:
All kinds of speculation is now seething about what might happen; a war to cull the surplus males, a rise in crime, a huge expansion in the prostitution that is already a major industry in every Chinese city, a rise in homosexuality.

All in all, it's a highly anecodotal and lurid article about a very real and sensitive issue. In many ways a surprising departure from the usual siege mentality. I don't see the DM going to all this trouble unless they were bed-making for a lot more exposure in coming months about China. I'll wager the majority include words like 'dissident' and 'propaganda'.

The sign-off says it all, really:

Quote:
Whatever we have been used to and thought of as normal is coming to an end.

Oooh, and bonus points for the first person to spot the phrase 'yellow peril' in the comments

I thought China was in vogue after they executed that British guy without a fair trial.

Proper justice over there apparently.

I'm surprised this blatantly racist comment got in (although not surprised it's 377 in the green) - have reported it.

Also, what's Hitchens pointing at in this photo?!

Greg was referring to the English Home Counties.

The kid has engraved a crude picture of a cock into his desk. It's a universal and timeless rite of passage, and, as such, Hitchens is rightly pointing it out as something the PC so-called guardians of Human Rights would like to ban.

You know, I don't think that's a bad article. Hitchens is always far better when he's on the foreign service - he wrote a pretty decent article about homelessness in Japan a while ago too.

BREAKING NEWS!: Gifted children are apparently pushed hard before they compete in international competition. China are, of course, the only country that do this:

Forging of the Mandarin mermaid: David Jones reveals how children are taken from their families and brutalised into future Olympians

Winning at all costs: A child we don't know anything about, taken out of context pulling a face doing exercise

The article is very heavy on the usual sinophobic rhetoric. Those worldly-wise Mailites are lapping it up in the comments, having decided that China = Even worse than Nu Labour:

Quote:
i wonder how many of these little girls have died during the past years from this treatment. we will never know. and stop saying this happens everywhere. i can guarantee that little girls are not dragged out of kindergarten in the u.s. or uk and made to live away from their families for years on end to train, without the parents agreeing to it. BIG difference. they may have harsh training, but it is the parents and hopefully the child's choice in the western world.

Raven can't have read any of the Mail's numerous articles about Toddlers and tiaras.

DMReporter on Twitter sums it up better than I could:

Quote:

But I thought the Mailites approved of hitting children. Isn't supposed to be essential to their upbringing?

On topic, the Mail are pushing this thing pretty hard, with terms like 'Mandarin Mermaid' and 'torpedo'. The usual Janus style approach, as they've had plenty of articles this year covering Chinese death row procedures, with the not-so-subtle implication that 'this is how we could cull a few chavs'.
I don't think it's necessarily racist to say China has some brutal practices, and serious human rights issues, but for sure, a country like America is in no position to lecture them, and we'd look pretty silly these days if we starting rattling our rusty old sabre at them. They have to sort their own house out, as do we.

i am surprised they have an animal protection agency over there with all the atrocities we hear about everyday coming from China- dogs set on fire, kittens being tortured, babies being left to die in bins or buried alive on a daily basis! 10,000 cases a day but that's only the reported ones. people like him should not be given a second chance- what kind of mentally disturbed person takes pleasure in watching another being suffer? i am sick of it.

Look out for follow up stories about Chinese people binding feet, eating birds nests and subjecting people to the wire jacket.

Herge was debunking crap like this back in the 1930s.

The Standard is typically Mailite on its front page. "Chinese match fixing" or something. South Koreans did it too, didn't they?
