There is one massive advantage the supermarkets have got which independents can't hope to compete with - their advertising budgets. The amount Tesco's ad agencies have got at their disposal is enough to persuade consumers that black is white, or rather, that white is the new black.

EEEEVIL, EEEVIL Tesco. Forcing the (cheap, hot) bread into the mouths of white middle-class pensioners, oh no, wait a minute....

Exaggerating size eh? I've never needed to do that. 8)

To be fair, that advert is entirely misleading.

I'd shop at Waitrose if I could- but Grimsby does not have one. The nearest ones are either about 40 miles down the road in Lincoln or 20 miles and a £5-odd there-and-back bridge toll to a place just outside Hull. Pah, bloody cheapskates.

Alas, I shop at Tesco. The quality is alright, the pricing is alright and the atmosphere in the stores is alright although I can't stand the hordes of people who just stop right in front of you leaving you with nowhere to go because they've inevitably stopped right next to either someone else's shopping trolley or one of those cage things that the workers use.

We went to Asda once (my wife wanted to try it).
Someone had taken a shit in the chilled foods section.

We didn't go back...

I don't like going to supermarkets, seeing all that food, all that uncessary variety, 500 types of different fucking flavoured water, so many people have nothing then you see someone spending £3-400 on a trolley full of shit, most of which will probably get thrown away since it's more than even a family of 10 could possibly eat before it goes bad.

I have to agree with you wholeheartedly there

We use Ocado, because we are both lazy and don't have a car to cart a week's shopping in. Mostly we use it for household and frozen stuff, we get most of our fruit, veg and meat locally as there are loads of really good and cheap Asian grocers and butchers plus a decent market. However, this isn't so rare if you live in a city; back in my home town the town centre has pretty much died, there's one butcher, a couple of bakeries and one fishmonger (despite being surrounded by sea) and a small Co-Op. All the other food shops have closed, because everyone wants to go to Tesco and Morrison's just outside town, and obviously a small grocer or deli can't compete :(

Well, there you have exactly put your finger on it - everyone WANTS to go to Tesco and Morrison's, because they're cheaper, more convenient and you can park for free. My original reason for posting wasn't the article, it was the comments, most of which are along the lines of 'boycott Tesco and go to old-fashioned bakers' shops'. Well, fine, do that, and then they wouldn't close down. But of course they won't, they'll shop at Tesco or Asda or wherever, but reserve the right to moan that the picturesque bakers' shops aren't there on the very rare occasions they fancy something a bit better. Standard Mail hypocrisy.

I don't think that particular hypocrisy is confined to Mail readers...
