The Daily Express is the first newspaper to officially switch to the 'other' side.

How do you feel about the fact that the Daily Express has decided that it wants to make it clear to readers that it is an anti-EU paper? I guess they must see this as a good way to sell more newspapers. They have committed to this alternative view now and it will be at least very embarassing for them if they have to U-turn and go back to supporting the status quo.

Lots of Newspapers currently employ columnists who write about the way they feel about their anti-EU perspective. For the purposes of obvious example and not because I have any interest, Daniel Hannan is an articulate Tory MEP completely against the EU. He writes for the Telegraph almost daily. The Telegraph as an institution is not anti-EU. It isn't necessarily pro-EU either. But that is what now sets the Express apart from the flock. I suppose they believe it will help them sell more papers?

And people will care what a down-market, disrespectable tabloid owned by a pornographer with a pathetically small circulation thinks because...?

That's certainly debatable, given the Express's plummeting readership. What is most certainly is though is a way to fill newspaper space with opinion and recycled material. All of which you don't have to pay as much for as materials from e.g. Reuters when covering breaking news stories. And as Dirty Des runs the Express as cheaply as cheap can be, he'll take hot air and library photographs any day of the week. Don't confuse a principled stand with a money-saving exercise that fits with your dwindling readership's worldview already.

As for embarrassment if it changed it's editorial mind - this is the paper owned by a porn magnate that is still peddling Diana conspiracy theories as front page "news". I suspect changing policy on Europe is the least of their concerns when it comes to saving face. If the Express is the new champion of the anti-EU movement, then I'd suggest the anti-EU movement is in dire straits indeed.

Question is Crabcakes. Should the name of the forum be changed to reflect this loophole? You seem to have a fair bit of venom in the tank should the opportunity ever arise. I never said I was a fan of the Express. Never even bought a copy.

If they are splitting away from the crowd and carving out a new niche I think it shows at least a fair bit of bravery and courage.

If it was just a cost saving exercise then why make such a fuss about it. They could continue to indulge in churnalisim for as long as there were hours in the day without a front-page whiteout.

Well it's not my forum to change the name of, but I suspect not because the point of the forum is (as I understand it) to point out the hypocrisy, bile and bullshit in the Mail. Therefore although there's an Express subforum, given the Mail still leads the way with hypocrisy, bile and bullshit I can't see the Express coming out with anything, be it a pull-out guide to ill-advised xenophobia or a 1:1 scale map of rockall, being any reason to change it.

And they're not doing anything new at all, as has been already pointed out. They're just rehashing what they've frequently said before in a tired attempt to get a few more readers. Or more likely try and stop a few more leaving. How is repeating yourself and asking your readers to pay to read that repetition and well-worn rhetoric (rather than, say, news) brave or courageous? And white front page? No photos. No paying for reporting. Cheapy cheapy.

For someone so cynical about the EU and able to read between the lines of Telegraph opinion pieces, you seem remarkably unable to apply any of that same cynicism or apparent insight elsewhere.

There's no bravery or courage, or niche carving involved in slightly hardening their line in ill-considered populist garbage. Bravery would be doing actual investigative journalism, courage would involve some rigorous, even-handed examination of all the facts. This shallow rebranding of the same old rhetorical shite is a craven commercial ploy. That would explain the fuss-making, too. Perhaps they've finally found a front-page "crusade" they can stick with for longer than a couple of weeks in silly season.

As an insightful cynic I have the ability to read through the lines in a piece from the daily telegraph and I'm anti-EU too. I can't work out if you are criticising me or if this is a compliment?

I'm pointing out you only appear to be able to apply these skills in circumstances that allow you to reach conclusions that fit opinions you obviously already hold.

Suffice to say, it's not a compliment.
