Not dure if we already have a topic for this? Anyway I couldn't be arsed going back to find it so here's another one.

The explicit art that shows bestiality with a goat just yards from The Ritz

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article ... -Ritz.html

Some of the comments are hilarious. Despite the fact that the painting is explained quite well in the article, there are loads of people upset over this apparently promoting bestiality. And yards from the Ritz as well!!!

Quote:
Bestiality is animal abuse. Isn't there enough animal abuse around without publicly promoting it? What next on show...child porn images? God, how low has the UK fallen.

Good post from someone who knew the artist:

Quote:
robert was a friend of mine and painted me. he would be delighted at the continuing narrow mindedness of people today who express shock at this picture but who would also go to the national gallery to see paintings of leda and the swan, europa and the bull, zeus and ganymede etc. do they not let children in there?

I think estebe is mistaking Mail readers for people who are familiar with Greek mythology.

Now if you'll excuse me, I think I'll go and find a goat to bother.

Ah, I see I've duplicated your efforts and posted it in 'Furywatch'. Very funny.

The goat picture, painted in 1983, appears to have classical roots and the pose bears a close resemblance to a statue of the mythological satyr Pan with a goat, which was found in Pompeii.

I've seen that statue. I feel all cultured now.

Goats indeed.

We've had a couple of art threads. Far as I can tell, the Mail position on art is as follows: "Something can only be Art if it is a representation of a particular Thing. The more closely it resembles the Thing, the better Art it is"

Far as I can tell, the Mail position on art is as follows: plate + Diana = art.

they seem to be big fans of novelty, you get a fair number of "artist makes diana out of toast!" type stories.

I recall visiting the Museum of Sex in Amsterdam, about 10 years ago. Most of the exhibits were various ornaments shaped like penises, or humourous explicit paintings and cartoons and the like, as well as a looming waxwork flasher. All good, harmless fun. Then, suddenly, I rounded the corner and, quite unexpectedly, encountered what I can only describe as a Wall of Bestiality. An entire wall of small photographs of humans engaged in coitus with animals of various shapes, sizes and levels of fluffiness. Which was all new to me, because animal sex was much less prevalent on the internet than legend had it.

Naturally, I was disgusted, and inspected it for some time to accurately gauge my level of disgust.

Artist gets £500,000 of taxpayers' money to transport vast lump of Arctic rock... and take it on a coastal tour of Britain

Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article ... z1Yfqfmzi7

Quote:
The Arts Council is spending a staggering £500,000 on floating a huge piece of Arctic rock more than 2,000 miles from Norway to England.

Once in the UK the newly-named Nowhereisland, which is the size of a football pitch and was only 'found' because of the partial melting of a glacier, will then be sculpted and toured 500 miles around the south coast.

The project, which forms part of its 2012 Cultural Olympiad, has been hailed by artists as an important and innovative way of looking at the dangers posed by climate change.

Sounds like an interesting idea.

Maybe they can cancel Trident and do a few more things like this.

Mommy's little Modernist!

Still waiting for this to be published in the comments - never mind the friggin' reply! *sigh*

I wrote:
Modernism is a very broad term, Amelia. What would you say this work is, exactly. Abstract expressionism? Neo-Dada? Surrealism? (perhaps not); Fauvism? Or maybe a bit of Post-painterly Abstraction? I look forward to reading your reply.

I love that use of "modernism". Because everything not off a chocolate box is the same.
