Am I missing something?
In this red-rag retarded article Mail waste of skin says that

Quote:
The clocks will go back this weekend to herald the end of British Summer Time.

But it might be for the last time, as moves are afoot to keep clocks wound forward by an hour for good from next year.

I thought the proposal was to move to Central European Time, not to abolish daylight saving time...

Did I get that wrong?

I never understood the newspapers obsession with this.. especially since they're trying to do it the opposite way I'd expect - GMT (well, OK, UTC) being an internationally recognised standard... if you want to stay on a time stay on that.

Reading between the lines they seem to be in favour of CET.. so does 'bizarre obsession with the clock' trump 'we hate everything europe stands for' now?

How long before there's a DM campaign against this change being 'forced upon us by europe'? :p

My point is that CET also observes daylight saving (known as CEST - Central European Summer Time) so in most European countries the clocks will also go back tonight. So if we go to CEST, what difference will it make - if the problem is setting the clocks back and forth?

I thought the plan was to bring us into line with the rest of Europe (except for Portugal). Which observes CEST.

Or am I conflating two different Mail obsessions?

You forgot another of their obsessions - Scotland-bashing. Because of course it's all our fault that 50 million English people are deprived of an hour of blazing sunshine every afternoon from November to March, because we're a lot of wimps with an inflated idea of our own importance. And as any fule know nobody in the north of England would suffer in the slightest if we stuck to BST all year round. No way.

Nope, you're correct.

The shitrag and it's readership are a little confused - which is understandable as they're thick cunts.

Maybe some of the older ones are remembering the 1968-1971 British Standard Time experiment but the proposal now is to move to [the equivalent of] CET.

I'm not too sure about it myself - I've seen the benefits of lighter evenings when in Belgium but I'm reminded of the fact that Portugal tried it and it was a failure, so they're now back on GMT. It would make more sense to have a Western European Time - with Spain and the Low Countries in it as well as the UK, ROI and Portugal. France is an odd one.

I vaguely remember either mum or dad telling me years ago that they did something similar to this just after the war, about 1946/7, where it was light until about midnight in midsummer. Dont quote me, may be wrong, anyone know?

I do remember the 1968-71 experiment with not moving clocks, I was towards the end of junior school at the time and as we all used to walk to school then, we were given reflective jackets to wear on the dark mornings

Quote:
During World War II, Britain retained the hour's advance on GMT at the start of the winter of 1940 and continued advancing the clocks by an extra hour during summer until July 1945. During these summers, Britain was 2 hours ahead of GMT and operating on British Double Summer Time. The clocks were reverted to GMT at the end of the summer of 1945. In 1947 owing to severe fuel shortages, the clocks were advanced by one hour twice during the spring and put back twice during the autumn so that Britain was back on BDST during the height of the summer.

Textbook Mail journalism: Take the extreme (the shortest day in this case) and spin it as a typical example. Top marks.

It would seem like something the Scottish Parliament could decided. I saw a debate in the Parliament where everyone ganged up on the SNP who were apparently "playing games" or something.

Devolution. Only when we want you to have it.

And they call for a referendum on Europe because they suggest an intelligent debate is possible?

No, they call for a referendum on europe precisely because intelligent debate won't happen. Intelligent debate is why successive governments - despite having differing views on europe - have never suggested leaving.

What they want to happen is exactly what happend with AV..

"A vote for europe is a vote for Nick Clegg"
"24 hours to save the country - vote No to europe!"

etc.
