The TV commercials for perfume/after shave lotion that proliferate at this time of year.

Aimed at persuading the gormless present buyer looking for something "quality" to impress the missus/boyf, because of the nature of the product a simple "Buy Chanel No 5 - it smells fucking lovely !" message is seemingly out, so the wealthy big perfume companies give free reign to the advertising agencies to do what they will. And by Jeebus, do they take full advantage, and produce collectively the biggest heap of festering, steaming shite you've ever seen - since last bloody Christmas.

How on earth is any would-be perfume buyer influenced in the smallest degree by this utter pish?

Personally I buy perfume based on trying it and seeing if I like it and it suits me. My other half knows never to buy me perfume unless I ask for something specific; it's a very personal thing and what smells great on one person might smell like a tramp's armpit on someone else. I guess there's the rub - it's not really an impulse buy (or shouldn't be) so there's a lot of competition in the market, hence the barrage of shitty big budget ads.

*thread hijack*

You just reminded me of something that I always find odd but nobody else ever seems to notice. My local corner shop stocks a brand of toilet roll called 'Aroma'.

Does anyone else think this is weird? The guy in the shop doesn't see my point and nor does his son. They do both now think I am weird. I'm not the one selling dodgy bog rolls.

Aroma? Who walks in the toilet and thinks, "Mmm! Aroma!"? Should you be seeking to draw peoples' attention to their sense of smell at such a time?

Dr McCoy has taken to buying scented bogroll.
I wondered what's the point, it has a faint smell of roses, (Though not after use).
She says it's nice and soft and no more expensive than unscented brands.

The millions of people who are apparently moved to tears by it!
If there's anything about it that might bring tears to my eyes, it's the cover version of the Smiths' "Please Please Please..." used in it - I just hate that sighy, breathy, hold-every-note-for-so-long-that-the-song-no-longer-has-a-tune style and all who use it when covering classic songs.

I'm not interested in the music (crap in the original, crap in the ad in my opinion) but you have to admit that it tells a decent little story, fools the viewer, the first time, and looks good. I wouldn't get an attack of the grizzles over it, but it is what it is, and it is good at it.

I think this goes here:

Jeremy Clarkson: 'execute' public sector workers, says BBC Top Gear host

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/tvan ... -host.html

Come on, it's just a joke...

One year in, and it looks as if twee sickening John Lewis adverts are going to become the next "you know christmas is here when..." thing, like the BBC dusting of their copy of The Snowman, only more middle class and appealing for your average Mail reader.

They'll make a christmas themed version of that one with that bloody woman in the red dress next year I bet.

I don't agree with this "it was just a joke" mentality. Aside from the fact you'd have to be a mind-reader (his politics would suggest he meant it) he gets away so often because of the eye rolling "it's that Jeremy Clarkson again" attitude. Imagine if The One Show had done a report on famine in Africa, when asked about his thoughts he said "they're only n*****s, why should us hardworking UK taxpayers support them. Let them die" would people still be turning a blind eye under the "it's just Jeremy Clarkson again. It was a joke. He's got a book to plug" banner he hides behind so often?

It's also worth noting that one of his fans did go out and shoot socialists.
