On the other hand I detect a small difference between people chattering and actual sniping. Now, all good?

did i imply i didn't think there was a difference? don't need to think it'll be implicated to find a glib attitute towards the use of excessive violence unnerving.

the incident has sparked off two extreme reactions, both bad in their own ways. no need for a-"yeah but which is worse"-off.

proabably cause i didn't quite understand yours, if you're not implying i didn't think there was a difference, then i don't know what you were saying.

it doesn't matter anyway, i had a thing that concerned me about the discourse around this event, you had another thing. i mentioned mine in a thread about said event, so did you, don't really know what the issue here is.

The Mail website did have a depressing number of seemingly sincere comments wishing that the protester had been clobbered to death with an oar, smashed into, etc.

Why?

1. He put his own five minutes of fame as more important than the enjoyment and effort of millions of other people around the world (the boat race is a global event screened in 50 countries and with large viewing figures in the UK). People who put themselves above others are always, always worthy of contempt in my eyes, whether they're a banker pocketing a bonus while laying off some staff or a dick in some speedos in the Thames.

2. His efforts meant the race had to be restarted, which in no small part culminated in the collapse, treatment and hospitalisation of a member of the Oxford crew. So not only was he incredibly selfish but his actions directly harmed others.

3. He knew he wasn't supposed to be there, there are enormous signs up everywhere telling people they shouldn't be there, he was in a sealed off area without the permission of the organisers. This alone is punishable.

4. Anything not covered above is covered in Malcolms excellent post.

It seems to me this is purely a question of "who" it affected, because they're all toffs and such (factually incorrect but there you go, I should have expected better than critical thinking on here when it comes to the Boat Race as was evidenced last year) rather than what he did. Pure Mailite thinking, playing the man and not the ball.

I've actually met this guy! He lived near my ex-girlfriend. She won't be surprised at these silly antics.

Add me to the Bluebell and Malcolm side. Lots of people like to watch the boat race, and it can't be held without closing the river. So what if the river's publicly owned? So are the roads the London Marathon goes along. And the Tour de France. It would be ridiculous for me to invoke my right to use that public space at the moment those were on.

Obviously there are general principles that apply to direct action, and these are quite hard to articulate. All I can say, is that the protest has to be really fucking good. This wasn't.

For the record, I can't abide rowing. I spent years listening to people bang on about it.

He could have just as easily walked around with a big sign saying "LOOK AT ME!!!"

Well, yes, it was a shit idea for a publicity stunt - though it did enliven the tremendously tedious boat race - and having read Mr Oldfield's "anti-elitism" blog, I find his ideas incoherent and a bit illogical.

Judging by the number of Mail columnists who have now written about this incident I think the paper would have been extremely thin if Trenton Oldfield had not decided to take a dip in the Thames on Saturday afternoon.

I am equating people enjoying themselves with people enjoying themselves and not being rudely interrupted by idiots.

Not sure where the idea comes from that they're all toffs. Daughter of a friend of mine went in for coxing at Oxford, and she has solidly comprehensive credentials.
