But surely Engelbert is from the good old days of pop music (with pan's people etc) before all these modern rappers that they have on The Top of the Pops and outside the shopping precints.

I heard something to the suggest that the choice could in fact be a cunning strategy, because Hump's one of the few British singers still touring round a number of the more far-flung countries that take part in the contest, therefore their voters might actually have heard of him and might sling him a few votes. I don't know why we don't just get out of the whole thing anyway.

Because it's three hours of prime time Saturday night television that the BBC can put on for the price of about ten minutes of EastEnders to be honest.

Personally, I absolutely think Eurovision is a wonderful hoot, especially when we lose spectacularly no matter what option we try (be it camp airline stewards, faded boy band, X-Factor failure singing a Pete Waterman song that sounds like a Rick Astley cast off from 1989, out of tune Barbie dolls etc etc etc) and we get the "oh, it's all because of politics" whinge.

And this deluge of complaints? Everyone I've talked to about it says "Hell, why not??" - it goes without saying that if he wins (and how long will it be before the tabloids brand him E-Hump or something) then the Mail will be the loudest cheerleaders saying it was an inspired choice...

To be fair, we tried that with Daz Sampson about ten years ago. Who? Exactly.

I like Eurovision, it's an institution. And it's massively entertaining taking bets on who Cyprus give their 12 points to. My money is on Greece this year...

Are you sure? I hear you can get 66-1 on Turkey.

If you think the mailite backlash is bad now, just wait till the "British Eurovision Singer in Mixed Race Shock!" headline.

It tends not to get reported that membership of Eurovision enables the BBC to access footage from across the continent, and to share their programming reciprocally. It's not as important as it once was, in this age of satellite TV and internets, but it's not just the song contest.

Yes, in the UK we tend to treat ithe contest as a bit of a joke - Terry Wogan, dodgy dancers and so on. But for a lot of countries (especially ones in eastern Europe) it's a nice way of expressing national identity in a format that doesn't involve ethnic cleansing and rape camps.

Possibly justified this time.

'Swamped with complaints' = 17 official complaints.

Not sure what the complaints to the BBC concerning the choice of EB for The Eurovision Song Contest are about, exactly, but it does seem to me that it's something of an inspired choice.

Englebert Humperdinck's image is just right for the tongue-in-cheek nature of the contest, plus the lad can actually sing a bit and has had a considerable measure of career success as a singer. if the political difficulty of the UK being seen as the most unpopular nation in Europe (thanks, Mr Cameron) can be overcome, he might even win.

If the complaints are about EB not being a serious choice, I'm puzzled. Just try to think who actually would be a serious choice, and it's tough. Kasabian? The Arctic Monkeys? Tiny Tempah? Pete Docherty? I know there was a rumour that Morrisey was going to do it, but that came to nowt.

So Englebert is ideal, in my view.

I'm imagining if the Mail won't tell us why it's because of the age. And as the Mail insists that the BBC hates old people (as they keep wheeling out Joan Bakewell to shout about) they wouldn't want to spoil the illusion.

So the BBC was "swamped" by the 17 official complaints, that'll be the cuts I suppose. I'm not surprised, the BBC is so ageist, why couldn't they use an older singer like Vera Lynn? Political correctness I suppose. It doesn't really matter as we won't win because we are the most hated country in Europe, thanks Mr Cameron.

I'm going to choose from my cache of generic Daily Mail comments to respond to this. The options are: 1. bring back capital punishment!; 2. send him back to where he came from; 3. what about Christian's human rights?; or 4. no doubt he's here for the benefits.
