For me the interesting thing about DA was the class war aspect - in particular the gentleman ranker vs the self-made middle class officer.

Apparently a last minute, spur of the moment decision at the casting session for the pilot. They had cast John Le Mes as the officer and Arthur Lowe as the Sergeant. It was only when they realised how brilliantly pompous AL was quite naturally that they recast and frantically reworked the script.

The point about Allo Allo being well received across Europe because it took the piss out of absolutely everyone is a good one. Notwithstanding Oboogie's reservations, I like Allo Allo. I think it works well because every single character in it, bar none, is a blithering idiot. Hi de Hi also worked well for the same reason, and really the principle of everyone being an idiot is more or less true for Dad's Army too, although there are obviously other unique factors in Dad's Army's success that have been touched on.

That could eventually lead to some rather heated discussions down the Top Gear studio.

Hammond does have a second-string career as a science presenter for kids. So to go to natural history isn't that much of a leap in the dark; it also fits in quite well with the 'go anywhere, do anything' personas adopted by the Top Gear team through their specials.

But what I see it as indicative of, is - sad to say - dumbing down, in the sense that mainstream adult programming seems aimed squarely at overgrown teenagers these days. A while ago on Facebook I mentioned that 'Countryfile' is just 'Blue Peter' for grownups. This seems to be following the same trend.

Is Allo Allo! popular in Europe? Or is it just hearsay and rumour spread by the publicity machine? A bit like Jerry Lewis being popular in France. And I'm not wholly convinced that Norman Wisdom was the Second Coming for Albanians, either.

I don't have access to statistics but I've often found myself watching ' allo allo' in European hotels. I can't say whether it's popular or not but I doubt that tv channels schedule the programme just for people like me.

As for Norman Wisdom in Albania, yes. Tony Hawks went there a few years ago to promote a ovelty single he did with Norman, and the guy was mobbed wherever he went.

I saw that. Television, what can you say?

BBC Olympics squad bigger than Team GB... as Corporation plans to squeeze 33 hours of TV out of every day of the Games
800 staff including 139 presenters will provide round-the-clock coverage

Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article ... z1t7qskgOK

Quote:
When our athletes march out into the Olympic stadium in July, they will be one of the largest British squads ever at the Games.

Apart from the BBC's team that is.

The army of Corporation staff being sent to broadcast at London 2012 easily outnumbers the competitors on Team GB.

In fact 765 BBC staff will be at the sporting spectacular, compared with the 550 athletes on the British team.

Sheer profiligacy. They could have done it with Hazel Irvine, three cameras and a sound man.

And of course if there was anything less than in-depth round-the-clock coverage it'd be all 'We pay our licence fee for THIS? Commie BBC ignored Olympics' etc etc.

They'll be providing 33 hours of coverage a day (in a 10 hour period or so). How many camera crews, technicians, commentators does that entail? How many sports are there? How many events to cover? I suspect many thousands. Have a look at the credits at the end of any documentary and you get some idea of how many people it takes to put a TV broadcast together. Then there's the meta coverage - the Riefenstahl aspect - which will involve many more.

I call bollocks on the story.
