Thought I'd draw attention to Mr Rowson's cartoons because

i) He is perhaps one of the very best contemporary examples of how to draw a very effective political cartoon for contrasting with the inept and piss-poor Paul Thomas, of Express notoriety, but also because

ii) His savage homing in on the truth is quite devastaing. Take this typical one, published yesterday, for example. I was simultaneously gasping in admiration at the visceral accuracy of the subject matter, and also weeping a little, because the cartoon confirms that many (all:-() of the things that I feared would come to pass before the election if the Tories took power (which they have, it being clear that the Lib Dems have the status in government only of useful idiots) - gleeful full-frontal attacks on the NHS, the BBC, and education. It also makes the point that the Mandelson/Blair/Brown nonsense is indeed a sideshow - something it always, in truth, was - but even more so now in the face of these bastards wilfully setting about wrecking the cherished institutions of our society for no better reason than Tory ideological dogma.

I do like Martin Rowson. His diseased and septic Tony Blair, which he's been doing for about 5 years now, never ceases to amuse me.

Note also the sinister stilletto-wielding Osborne (always in the background, always) and the personification of the useful idiot, Danny Alexander/Beaker.

I can't honestly tell who any of them are based solely on the drawing, which ,as representations of actual people, are as poor as paul thomas'

there are 4 kinds of political cartoonist;

the kind that are great at concepts but less characaturing.
the kind that are great at characaturing but less concepts.
the kind who are great at both characaturing and concepts.
paul thomas.

Even after I've told you who at least two of them are? You should probably stick to photographs, Moonie. They require merely the barest of acquaintances with current affairs, which may let you identify the protagonists more readily (especially if the photos are captioned), and which might suit you better than those pesky sophisticated political cartoons.

In the meantime, If I were you I'd leave the appreciation of great political cartoons to those of us who are up to speed. Hope this helps. :roll:

Fair enough. The government is new enough for most of us not to recognise most of the cabinet if we knocked them down in the street. No reflection on Rowson's abilities, it's just one on the perennial difficulties of the political cartoonist. Cameron and Osbourne were prefectly recognisable, which was enough to get the point of the cartoon across.

I got 6 of them from the drawings and another 2 from what they were beating up. (I assume it is Lansley on the NHS and Hunt on the BBC?)
