Funny he's not described as a bloated fat-cat who earns more than the PM when he says things like that. I'm surprised they put in that quote from the FBU, as it's pretty clear what side the Mail's bread is buttered when they describe the "malaise gripping the public sector".

The great public, private pay gulf: State workers get £136 a week more than private employees in pay and pensions

Another public sector bashing story. I think these type of articles are going to be the most abundant over the coming months, and the public sector will spend a while at the top of the Hate Chart (sponsored by Pepsi) for the Mail and its readers.

A good comment from someone here, reminding the Mail readers that they have a rather selective definition of public sector workers at times:

Quote:
Good old Daily *ail, stirring up things again. A few FACTS. I was a printer before I became a fireman, private firm and all that, 37.5 hour week, 08.15-16.30, Monday to Friday. No nights or weekends, Christmas and every bank holiday off, overtime if I wanted it, non-contributory pension, sick pay and as much tea as I could drink. I took a PAY CUT to join the fire service, and in 18 years I have been burnt, been in a flashover that nearly killed me, gone through a floor, had a roof come down on me, had a child die in my arms after a failed resuscitation attempt, and many other visions that I can never forget, no matter how hard I try, and attended a colleagues funeral who was killed at a fire. I wouldn't change a thing though, apart from maybe the bad memories, and I wish my colleague was still alive. Don't tar all public-sector workers with the same brush.

- Fireman, Bristol, 15/9/2010 17:49

The Wail is really on the offensive against the public sector at the moment, with the TUC conference on. To a lot of their journalists and readers, it is convenient to paint the public sector as being a load of unnecessary and under-worked office staff on extortionate pay grades who either spend their days at home sick on full pay or on jolly "team-building" exercises at Alton Towers.

I can't believe their readers don't spot these stories because they come up so often.

Civil service privatises catering and cleaning. These salaries are then compared with the more skilled jobs that aren't privatised. Ergo private people earn less.

Tony McGurk has backtracked on that "bone idle" comment. Mail hasn't covered it, oddly.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-me ... e-11310942

Quote:
"I am passionate in defending our service and in hindsight I used language which I now regret.

"I apologise if any staff are upset by my comments."

Not sure if that last bit counts. I hate it when people say they are sorry if "other people" were offended, shifting the onus, as if to say "it's your fault you were offended" when it's really the perpetrator's fault for being a twat.

The Mail displays its usual thoughtful, in-depth approach to polling:

"POLL RESULTS
Are people who work in the public sector lazier?
No
22%Yes
78%Thank you for voting"

The other poll results are also hilarious - 75% agree that child benefit should be scrapped at 16, but, would you believe it, 66% think winter fuel payments SHOULDN'T be scrapped for 65-69yos. Oh, you would believe it. Fancy that.

From looking at that, you'd almost get the impression that lots of mail readers are middle class, private sector workers, who are approaching retirement........

And who don't give a fuck about any other generation than their own. Thankfully the financial timebomb they created went off in their faces before they got a chance to pass it on to their kids and retire on a final-salary pension.

its not just the mail that loves spitting vitriol about the public sector. Have a read of most topics on bbc's hys message boards, theres one on there about pay gaps which has just turned into a lets all have a go at the public sector because our taxes pay them. I used to find reading comments on there amusing, but for the sake of my blood pressure I'm having to stop as it just appears to be populated by cunts now.

I like the idea everyone should be treated like shit in a job if some other people are. Politics of envy.

The Mail in 1349- "Are these labourers who move around looking for the best pay lazier than serfs?"

I wonder if they'll publish that the London Fire Brigade are going to ballot for strike and if the ballot passes, the strike will be at the end of October/first week in November.

I was at the LFB march and demo today; it was all very dignified and all had on full dress uniform.

Good for you!

My nephew is based at Shxredxtch, with all it's history of the Blitz. The management want to revise contracts, without any savings from their own senior ranks. I doubt the Mail will touch it, as it does not fit their agenda.

It makes me fucking mad!

It'll only fit their agenda when Assetco, a private fire brigade, get a major incident diverted to them.

My partner works for LFB, most likely knows your nephew. Small world. As for the contract revision; all fire fighters are being sacked on the 23rd November if they don't agree. I honestly do not know how they can get away with it.

The only news agency remotely covering this is the Independent despite all the press at the rally yesterday.
