This is doomed to be a very short thread, since it may be some time before we can bid to host another World Cup. Apologies if someone else has picked up on it but I couldn't see any other obvious threads for it.

Wills sick as a royal parrot: England loses bid to host World Cup to 'mafia state' Russia (and Putin didn't even bother to turn up)

There's a great dig at the BBC and the Sunday Times:

Quote:
The recriminations over England's bid - which was overshadowed by the scandal over chairman Lord Triesman's resignation and media investigations into FIFA chiefs - will now begin.

It looked to have suffered from a backlash against corruption investigations into FIFA members by BBC Panorama and the Sunday Times over the last two months.

Rather surprisingly, there's no mention of the source of the Lord Triesman scandal anywhere to be found!

The reader comments are predictable too- those dullards complaining about the cost of it all and those who never have a nice word to say about anything!

I`m so glad England didn`t win.. I`d be embarassed to let thousands of visitors see what a tip this country really is.

The best country won. Would have been a shambles here, we can't even clear snow.

- Fred, France, 2/12/2010 16:11

Since when was France bidding to host this tournament?

Quote:
Also no doubt how this country handles anything but ideal weather and the state of our third world country transport system and the high costs of doing anything in the UK, must have played a part.

Phew !

Does this mean that James is pleased that Spain also lost out in the vote?

Quote:
Good. We have chucked enough money at sporting events already.

We have even seen if the olympics wil return a fraction of the money spent to date but already we have politicians prepared to chuck some more tax payers money down the drain hole in the belief this, like the Dome and 2012 will engender some feel good factor about Britain.

Chuck the money at the OAPS, the unemployed youth or clean or our discusting town centres!

Miserable sod

Thank goodness for that - no tax payers money will now be wasted on holding this mindless twaddle.

Too late..... how many millions (and it will have been millions) has already been wasted out of taxpayers money for this????????????

Football is the opium of the masses. The players grow fat on inflated wages, just like the drug barons. Pity the people who pay good money to watch 22 overpaid thickos kick a bag of wind about. Can we cancel the 2012 Olympics as well?

I want to know who picked up the tab for all those that went to lobby FIFA:- Beckham, Boris, Cameron, Prince William, the security guards.

I lay you odds they did not pay a penny.

You and I paid for it, and I hate football!!!!

Why would they take the World Cup to a toilet like England

If you hate this place so much why not do something about it- or leave?

It's completely full of classic opinions that you've come to expect from the readers of our favourite tabloid newspaper. Mine it at will!

After reading some of them on the site, it seems to be:

50% - self-deprecating sods, anti-England (non-football and football)
49% - cheap-skates ("but but but I don't want to spend money on this")
1% - people mention the DM's role in the Lord Triesman scandal

They've already made a "It was teh darkies wot lost it for us" article, I was expecting them to wait for a couple of days before they brought that out

Sometimes even experienced Mailwatchers are surprised at the levels of racism and hatred lurking not far from their surface. This is one of them.

On BBC news someone from the FA was being interviewed on why he thought England lost the bid. His answer was that out bid was not international enough, and we focused too much on how great England is and not enough on the international side of football.

So throw in a couple of articles where it was the fault of the darkies and Labour, then finally decide it was Big Oil. With a bit of luck, Dacre will soon be sipping tea that glows in the dark. And they even throw in that the winning bid will be bad for the environment, due to coal-fired power stations. The hypocrisy is absolutely staggering. They should ignore the whole thing really, this is making them look like a screaming baby wondering where the little plastic tit went when they chucked it out the pram.

I fear the "Qatar is holding an unenvironmental world cup" will be wheeled out against anyone suggesting we do something environmental.

I think their mistake was putting Adrian Chiles in the video.

Throw in some killer bees and we'll be well on our way to a game of Scrabble.

Am I alone in thinking they've just dusted off the "Eurovision sour grapes" folder.

Wow, you're not joking! No wonder it's Griffin's favourite paper. Never mind the fact that it's quite sensible for a country once associated with footie hooligans to try and shake off that image and emphasise the way football brings people together when "selling" said country to the outside world... there are some un-English-looking types in the video! We ought to have had some stock footage of policemen and Royal guards instead - they may not have much to do with football, but at least they won't frighten the horses! And let's have a sneer at Elbow while we're at it, because anyone who isn't Elgar or an X Factor winner must be a total nobody!
This paper makes me sick.

TBH you would be the only person I have come across which doesn't think that Oil Billions have paid a part in getting the world cup.

Russia I can almost understand....but Qatar?

Wales might as well have bid, it has double the population and 4x the number of football supporters.
