As always multiculturalism and Marxism is to blame as Leo proceeds to moan about the ignorance and violence of the British public, above all sighting Frankie Boyle as one of the catalysts for this change. It's what I imagine to be a 'form whinge' (apologies for not reading the article but Express Online has a habit of buggering my laptop) - take a recent incident (in this case Boyle) and conflate it into a denunciation of anything that springs to the author's mind that can be put down to 'leftism', 'PC', 'Islamification' or whatever else the target of the day is (but it's almost always one of these three).

He was a Labour councillor in Islington in the late 80s/early 90s and worked for Harriet Harman at one point. Most of his income in the 90s came from articles attacking his former colleagues, many of whom went on to better things in the early Blair government.

Funnily enough I know a few people who knew him at the time. He was absolutely loathed by party members (across the entire spectrum of the left) due to his sheer obnoxiousness. Apparently nearly everyone refused to help him with his ward re-election campaign and he lost his previously safe seat to the Lib Dems. He blamed local party members for his defeat and became extremely bitter about Labour.

Nothing like a bit of sour grapes on his half. Any anecdotes you heard from the people who knew about his twattery, that stand out Catkins?

Not much to relate sadly. He was ultra new-Labour, and quite an obsessive activist and councillor but once he'd lost his council seat he turned on a sixpence and hated the party with a passion. I know one councillor from the time who when McKinstry's name is mentioned almost starts twitching, and can only whisper 'he's the one person I feel really betrayed by!'

However one of the activists told me they'd volunteered at Millbank during either the 87 or 92 election (can't remember which - it might have been both). Peter Hitchens was an Express journo at the time and attended the daily briefings. He was almost incapable of being civil to staff working there because they were employed by the dreaded left, and was especially aggressive and obnoxious towards women and ethnic minorities. He was even worse when he buddied up with Bruce Anderson - they were a toxic combination apparently.

What an awful article. I assume he is trying to make a point when he says in one paragraph that 'history has been derided' and he then goes on to argue that 'above all there is malign multi-culturalism which holds that our nation’s past is no more than a tale of racial oppression. Britons are taught to despise their own national identity with the result that some yob regards urinating on Churchill’s statue as a progressive act. The great man himself would weep with despair at what has happened to the nation he once saved'. Yes, this radical idea that we should study history objectively and actively and rigorously question 'received wisdom' such as 'the British Empire was a good thing' has led to the desecration of the subject. On what authority can he make sweeping generalisations which dismiss decades of academic research? Has he read many history books/journals recently?

A history lecturer of mine once made a brilliant point. He argued that you can't sit on the fence with historical issues. In this case, either the British Empire was a good thing or a bad thing. You can't say 'one the one hand, the Empire developed the infrastructure of its colonies, but on the other hand, a lot of people were raped and killed'. How many miles of railroad justify such attrocities? 5? 10? 100? 500?

Also, I can't believe no one picked up on the typo in the title: 'THE BRITAIN WERE IGNORANCE AND BRUTALITY FLOURISH '

Ed Miliband is an MP. So was Clement Freud.
