Just got round to reading this,and am rather befuddles.Why on earth would the figure of speech"fancy a pint?" be changed by a change in the actual measurements?

People use language to convey meaning.The meaning would be the same.

Well, exactly. Unless you're so literal-minded that you take "fancy a pint" to mean precisely one pint and no more of beer, then it'll probably survive. Generally, in my experience, "fancy a pint" means anything from two quiet pints to several pints, a couple of shots, a pill and a gig I hadn't been planning to go to followed by more beer and a couple of joints back at home.
