So, what does the future hold? They die off. But are they replaced? Is there anything about the next generation that should make them different?

They're going to have to accept a new audience of feckless stay-at-home types who won't work or can't find any.

An irresistable fall in dead tree sales will lead to the unveiling of a dirt cheap freeview channel - 'Mail T.V.' featuring endless Hitler documentaries, The Littlecock show (enabling the trousering of public service broadcast payments via the restructured licence fee - 'It's a news and current affairs programme!' they'll cry), Liz Jones does (insert crass fuckwittery here), Midsomer Murders, Love Thy Neighbour, Endless documentaries on Thatcher, cheap, imported American 'When Muslims Attack' documentaries, Jim Davidson, At home with BNP/EDL leaders, etc. Following the lead of a certain Express owning porn baron, really. Although claiming to be somehow more respectable and desireable as a 'lifestyle' channel. Same old shit, different medium. Maybe a little more downmarket to accomodate racist chavs enticed by a Daily Star/Jordan style alliance with a non-entity that fills up the schedule.

Sadly I see plenty of people in their 40s and 50s reading the vile rag on the tube. I think we have a few decades yet before the Mail needs to re-think its stance on everything.

Probably true.

Though they can't really go on like now until that lot die. The bosses will (rightly) get worried about them dying out a few years in advance. So there should be some changes before then.

Well, Emmett's only what? 28? There is some danger he might breed, I suppose......

He's not quite like them, from what I've seen. He's a nationalist (which I don't mean to use insultingly). He has the EU bee in his bonnet, but Mail people have loads more- Muslims, gays, feminists, the BBC.

I suppose they can begin to angle it more to attract BNP and EDL thugs, they seem to be a slightly younger age group.

On a different forum I used to lock horns with a feckwit who thought Littlejohn was God and Gaunt should be PM.Only a couple of years older than me his narrow minded blinkered view of England could never be challenged.I remember after the school closures due to snow myself and another Northumbrian trying to explain there were children who had 40 mile round trips to school in this county.Maps, lists of schools, links to the state boarding school website, none of this mattered. He KNEW that we were wrong

People like this will always exist, and always buy the Mail.

I think they're hoping that current readers will pump their kids' heads full of their current bullshit to form the next group of reactionary idiots. If not, as someone pointed out, they'll have to fall back on the young right-wingers, who, in my experience, are usually BNP/EDL thugs.

Perhaps, but when Star/Sun fodder grows up and starts thinking it's classy or something, they'll probably switch.

I think you have hit the nail on the head there, the Mail is aspirational,God help us,for those aspire to middle class mediocrity.

I don't think it's quite the same thing. The yob element of the Star doesn't seem very Mail-like to me. Of course people are quite capable of forgetting what they did when they were younger, but the snobbery of the Mail might be a problem.

As I understand the Mail people now, they missed out on all the youthful fun and have never got over it. That's an important driver in the copious "look, Princess Beatrice is drunk, terrible" material. Would that work for the next generation?

I also think the Mail are a lot brighter than the Star lot.

Broadly speaking, people get more right-wing, and, of course, more obsessed with the price of their house, as they get older. I can't see the Mail's readership changing much - indeed, the ageing population may, if anything, bolster it. Remember, much of the Mail's demographic grew up in the 60's, and that idealism doesn't seem to have carried forward into the readership's current viewpoint.
