It isn't just Abernathy.
Humphrys' whole attitude, mocking, cynical and hectoring, has debased political debate over the past 10 years and more. The Today programme bears a lot of the responsibility for cynicism about politics and politicians in general. Remember it was Today that gave us Andrew Gilligan and the Dodgy Dossier Debacle, under editor 'Racist Rod' Liddle who believed that the truth wasn't necessary for 'good radio'.

Don't get me wrong, we need to be constantly sceptical about politicians and their little tales, but cynicism simply erodes confidence and corrodes institutions.

whislt I agree with you malcolm I was always told that Gilligan was right and nasty new labour smeared him at least by Gilligan in between his ravings about muslims

yes it does you know both my brother and dad listen to the today programme but I can't work out why I mean as others say it's jusy cynical for cynicism's sake

I listen to it as well - and I agree with what been said about it. But the thing is, what else can you listen to first thing in the morning?
If I had to wake up listening to either Moyles or Evans I'd be even more homicidal by 8:30am. And let's not even mention local radio.
Is Radio 3 an alternative? I notice they do something called Breakfast, but if it's classical music it's just going to send me back to sleep (in a good way).

Oh man. He wrote quite the worst autobiography I've ever come across. God knows why I read it. I'd never listened to the Today programme (too fucking early) and I think I'd got the impression from bits of media that he was a really sharp interviewer rather than a windbag.

I remember, he didn't like apples being wrapped up prettily so young kids might like them.
