Tory MP in sensible about riots shock.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/politics/2011 ... and-policy

Quote:
James Clappison, the Conservative MP for Hertsmere, barrister and member of the home affairs committee, has written to Grieve asking for assurances that the normal standards of justice should apply to alleged riot offenders. "We cannot risk the appearance of two systems of justice," the letter says.

It grieves me to say it, but in many scenarios I would rather trust a Tory to safeguard freedom than some of those who would claim to be on our side.

What "many scenarios" would those be, then?

Being able to get a fair trial for one (or much more than one in the past couple of weeks).

I don't trust them at all, without David Davis in the Cabinet being heavyweight enough to argue that torture and stuff is bad.

Cameron's gone from "fight Big Brother" to "shut down the internet when I say so" in one year.

Inquiry panel:

Quote:
Darra Singh, the chief executive of Jobcentre Plus and former chief executive of Ealing and Luton councils, will chair the panel, which will also include Simon Marcus, the founder of the Boxing Academy in London, Baroness Sherlock, previously chief executive of the National Council for One Parent Families, and Heather Rabbatts, a former barrister.

Rabbatts went on to become Britain's youngest ever chief executive of a council, Lambeth, and then to senior positions in organisations as diverse as the Bank of England, the Royal Opera House and Millwall Football club.

Rabbatts seems like a serious individual but she's a funny choice really. Singh has her local authority experience. I'm surprised there isn't a senior police officer there. I don't think they can arrest their way out of the problem or anything, but surely gangs and whatever will involve nicking a few people. And of course, it was a "dubious" police shooting that kicked it all off.

The other two nominees suggest we're going to get a lot of "these one parent families, eh?" and "give this charity some money". Someone will be needed on there to ask charities difficult questions, because loads of them will be sensing a windfall. Maybe Singh (and, to be fair, Rabbatts) will be able to do this.

And why not sociologists? People who study social problems professionally (without vested interest)- crazy idea having them somewhere, eh?

Was it REALLY worth it? Doctor's daughter who looted Poundland for a bottle of Lucozade is jailed for 8 months

She must be another of the Blair/Brown created feral underclass. Seem to be a few of these type of headlines when middle-class people are sent down for their part in the riots, giving off more than an air of sympathy. Be those Labour born kids from feckless families fault, they must've dragged her in and forced her to loot.

Singh is a bloke.... He took over from Leigh Lewis and though it might be government influence has made it even worse.

Yeah, I know. I was referring to Heather Rabatts being female.

I had heard about some of the sentences being handed down and thought well they are tough but this comparsion is worrying...

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/ ... onths.html

Lad with no criminal record robs bottle of water and gets 6 months

http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/standard/ ... ht-demo.do

Bloke with previous smashes into a police officer causing bodily harm and gets 5 months

And David Cameron labels this a broken society, it's a joke society.

Or indeed this.

http://www.camdennewjournal.com/news/20 ... d-jail-sen

Chris Basson, 54, did not notify the Department of Work and Pensions about the allowance he received during his time as a councillor for Belsize ward at the Town Hall. This led to him being overpaid his incapacity benefit entitlement by £11,546, Westminster Magistrates Court was told. Mr Basson (pictured left with former Lib Dem leader Sir Menzies Campbell in 2006) admitted a charge of fraud last month and was sentenced yesterday. He was given a 28 day prison sentence suspended for 12 months. Mr Basson was also handed a three month curfew and ordered to wear an electronic tag.

Given how quickly many of these cases got to court there is no way in which solicitors could have time to prepare any kind of defence case.

With the case that went to crown court and defendants got sentences of more than 6 months there is no way these defendants could have had fair trials because such cases usually take months to come to court so that solicitors can liaise with barristers to put a proper defence together.
