The Mail v Teachers

I've been a teacher for twenty years and in that time I've met very few teachers who actually want to see the law changes to allow them to use physical restraints on children. If you go down the route of restraint and physical contact it is extremely problematic. When I've worked in special school where physical restraint is used any attempt to restrain a pupil has usually resulted in four or five members of staff be involved. This is because a couple of staff will be required to do the restraining, another member of staff will need to be on hand to act as a witness and then you will need someone to oversee the rest of the class while the disruption continues.

Even if the law is changed it will needed to be tested in the courts before schools are convinced that it is safe to allow staff to be more physical. At present an LA may be prepared to fund any legal cost but what happens when most schools become acadamies. Will an academy real want to find itself in court paying it's court cost out of it's own budget? A school that was taken to court could be lost with a huge legal bill which would inevitably lead to teachers facing redundancy.

Gove-friendly bollocks from the ubiquitous Professor Alan Smithers at the 'University' of Buckingham. His report also suggests teachers of modern languages are insufficiently qualified if they have a 2:2 degree. In many cases, though, the staff with lesser degrees are native speakers of one of the languages they teach.

Of course, the Mail only makes an issue of sexual harassment when the victim is male (or a very pretty/famous woman). However, it creates a mindfuck for Mail readers with their Inbetweeners notion of male sexuality:

There was some research about 15 years ago that demonstrated that racist and sexist attitudes (in fact attitudes of all sorts, including those towards food) were pretty firmly fixed by the age of 3, simply by observation of adults surrounding the child. In evolutionary survival terms, infants have to be quick at picking up the fears, scares and 'avoidances' displayed by adults - or else they get eaten or poisoned or abducted. It's all pretty common sense, I would have thought.

I wonder how happy that lot would be if their kids came home upset because the others had been saying they were gay? I bet they'd be down at the school the next day complaining that the school wasn't taking enough action to prevent it.

I discount the possibility of them being unhappy if a genuinely gay child of theirs was upset by this, as the thought would never cross the tiny, tiny minds of people like this.
