If they didn't like him they wouldn't give him attention (c.f. hacking scandal), but they love him! They've already invested time and energy into turning him into a character, and that's all the mail's political commentary is; they rely on characters, stereotypes, gross exaggerations and mis-representations of people. Their description of him as 'benefits boy' will be one that they will recall in six months time as fact in any articles they write about him.
