BA says, "It will not tolerate abusive behaviour towards our staff...." and rightly so. Now it just needs to keep an eye on a small minority of its staff and ensure that they are more courteous to the paying customer.

I also like how the DM has a photo of Miss Howell in the uniform of British Midland International, not BA!

I fly from Heathrow to Manchester at least weekly & I always used to see the same professional stewards & stewardesses, who also recognised me as a regular. They had a real rapport with their passnegers, but for the last 2-3 months we have been getting these young, disinterested flight attendants. The girls wear these silly "Thunderbirds style" hats & with the boys coloured foundation, plucked eyebrows and outlandish hairstyles seem to be the order of the day! The simple bacon roll they used to serve has also gone to pot - panicking seems to be the order of the day. Bacon rolls that are supposed to be served hot are now generally cold & they miss out the last passnegers sitting in the middle of the plane more often than not. BA have made a cut too far & have clearly got what theu have paid for. It should say when you buy your ticket that you are getting these YTS crew!! I'm off to Virgin Trains!

Bit of Mailwatch bingo- nice bloke who understands the cabin crew's case.

But, flying Heathrow to Manchester?!

Hang on, he is taking the train in future! He's fine.

Fasten your seatbelts: BBC drama Pan Am recreates the days when flying was fun and glamorous - with some VERY racy plotlines

It was more pleasant then, with no security precautions. My first flight was to Florida in 1971. I took a tripod in a case as cabin baggage, and it wasn't checked. The plane stopped to refuel in Bermuda, and we were able to walk to the beach w2hile we waited.

the mail will like Pan-Am since in those days you could sexually harass air hostesses and not get thrown off the flight

It was more glamorous because it was much much more expensive, therefore aspirational, as well as being something that was seen almost as the future being here today. I could never have afforded to fly to New Zealand or even New York in the sixties, and I earn a pretty decent wage. The planes were also better fitted out with more leg room etc, the food was served on china with proper cutlery and so on and so on. If you look at old airline ads from the 50s and early 60s you'll see large comfy seats facing each other across a table rather than the packed rows you get now.

Also, being a stewardess was a very glam job back then as it was one of the very few if not only ways a young woman could have a job that involved travelling the world (and the airlines had some very strict looks/weight/height requirements). Believe it or not it was quite a coup to date a stewardess. They appeared in ads for the airlines and their uniforms were often designed by top designers of the day (Pucci for example) and could be quite risque - part of what they were selling and representing was sex and glamour after all.

This sums it up pretty well http://dynamist.com/articles-speeches/a ... lines.html

It was also a bit dodgy in safety terms. I remember travelling from Kenya in the early 60s on an old prop plane when one of the engines developed a fire and had to be turned off. We continued flying at a bit of an angle and had to land at Khartoum, but did so safely. I was very young and I think it was all a bit of a game to me, but my parents didn't enjoy the memory.

And yet more...with some nurse bashing comments thrown in for good measure too!

Quote:
As a family member of a patient....I wish I could voice my displeasure with the extremely rude, Ignorant...pushy ...obnoxious nurses who get in our face. Too busy chatting about their next holiday at the nurses' desk to answer a patient's bell. You can't stick to visiting hours as you are concerned for your extremely ill (terminal in my case) loved one as you know they are left unsupervised for hours.

Most of the comments are actually pro flight attendants though! :o

Can everyone stop bashing "office workers". I am an office worker and get to travel with my job plus, go overseas on conferences, receive lots of perks in terms of products (as i work for a large cosmetic co) plus many many more good things. We "office workers" might work the hours but, there are MANY amazing jobs that are office based! Just because our job isn't the actual bit where you're in the air serving customers, we are in MANY ways doing fun and eventful things. i could have been an air hostess but no, i chose to work a little harder so i can have an "office" job but the best bit is, I GET TO TRAVEL AS PART OF MY JOB and an even better bit is, I GET PAID A HELL OF A LOT MORE THAN A HOSTIE WITH THE SAME EXCITEMENT!!!

Actually Mummytoan, you are so wrong. Whilst I can't speak for Kate, I certainly never had a desire to push a trolley up and down a plane because I can't see how that can be viewed as glamorous. You see, I worked hard enough at school and university so that I could afford to pay for the first class ticket to travel myself and so that I could be waited on hand and foot by the hostess rather than having to become one. Glamour to me is being in control of your work life not being subject to serving food and drink in high altitudes in unattractive uniforms. The last time I had to wear a uniform was at school!

I know several cabin crew. Maybe their profession would be taken more seriously if the majority didn't drink and party to excess, sleep around and generally behave like primadonnas.
