(Now amended. No idea why Barnsley needed to be all upper case.)

Don't know what to say about this, you can't really defend Barnsley if you've ever been there.

But, as usual, a couple of non-stories that you'd be hard pressed to find on an inside page of the Barnsley Chronicle - they'd never even make the Y(E)P.

The dog story could happen anywhere so I've no idea why the emphasis is on Barnsley?

The 'Stipendiary Magistrate' is quite right, though. Love is a general, all-encompassing term for anyone around these parts. No one should be offended in any way by it. I was quite taken aback when a (male) bus driver first said it to me when I was younger (not used in my family as we're all mongrels from all over the country) but after the initial shock you get used to it.
But... it has no place in a court of law, even if that court is just a court of petty sessions.

The worse part of stories like this are the wholly inaccurate 'regional' lists that the Mail dreams up too go with them. Where do they get their info from? Bizarre.

Perhaps the sub-editor couldn't believe that any kids in Barnsley were fit enough to jump over a fence.

"Love" is not restricted to Yorkshire of course.
It all depends on context, round here it's "pet" which would probably earn a slap anywhere else. When I lived in Oxfordshire "m'dear" was common, including between males, but even they used to blanch at my Cornish mate who called everyone whose name he didn't know "moi luvvor".

Agreed.

The last bit of blatant, open, monkey noises and chanting racism I ever saw at a football match in England was at Barnsley.
