I should point out that Oakland is run by the Democratic Party the order to clear the OWS people out of Oakland was given By Jean Quan the Mayor of Oakland and a member of the Democratic Party in fact most of the places that the OWS crowd is camping out in America are in places that are run by the Democratic Party like Portland Oregon where there has been a OWS protest in fact New York City where the OWS movement started is run by the Democratic Party so there is no way anybody on this site can blame the riot in Oakland on the Republicans because they are in charge in Oakland.

Did anyone mention the GOP or the Dems? If they did I missed it. I don't think the extreme polarisation of United Statesian politics has infected this site.

But if you want me to mention something about it I will.

Politicians are corrupt. Small fry United Statesian politicians (mayors etc.) are probably more corrupt than most. There's hardly any difference between the two parties at that level (despite what "some" might say). Jean Quan may ride a donkey but that's because that's the only way she could get elected in a city like Oakland.
And you can bet your bottom dollar that the police departments in all the cities you mention are not staffed by pot-smoking, peace-loving hippies, either. That's just the way of police departments in general, but it seems to be more pronounced in the United States. So I'd say it's the heavy-handidness of the officers on the ground that's the problem here - not who ordered them in.

Not just at that level. I still Peter Cook's line in Beyond the Fringe holds true: "You see, old boy, American politics, it's like this: you have the Republican party, which is the equivalent of our Conservative party, and the Democratic party. Which is the equivalent of our Conservative party".

It's only in the last couple of years, with the Republicans shifting even further to the right and in some cases detaching from rationality all togetehr that there's starting to be a clear difference.

So now the GOP is a sort of 'Merrican UKIP?

Parts of it make UKIP look positively rational. UKIP are basically within the normal political discourse, if somewhat loopy. The Tea Party are way out where the buses don't run. The Tea Party pretty much start with Dorries-grade lunacy and work outwards.

In States like Mississippi, Florida and Ohio are going to be voting on whether to give fertilized eggs living person status. Which would effectively make abortion and forms of birth control murder. The fundamental problem with American politics is there simply isn't a separation of Church and State of both sides. Look how much Obama had to prove his Christian credentials to gain support. However, the Republicans have shifted so far to the right it's incredible. I'd very much doubt you'd ever see a law like this considered in this country (fingers crossed). I mean, look at the ridicule Nadine Dorries rightly gets. Now there is no limit to the amount corporations can donate to either candidate it comes as no surprise Obama has managed to gather over 1 billion and a lot of it from finance and energy firms.

I thought that was an import from the USA, too? The GOP started using it as a derogatory term in the 80s and the hillbillies lapped it up (because them, there good ol' boys is stupid!). It reached fever pitch in the run up to the 2004 election. Before that it was seldom used as such.

Now because of the Internet our right-wing fucktards have picked it up from their right-wing fucktards and have started applying it to anything they don't understand. Bless.

A concerted effort should be launched to reclaim it.
