Interesting. I was reading a wiki article on Dicken's 'A Christmas Carol' the other day and it said that christmas was not really celebrated post Cromwell until around the time this novella was published.

Aaah here...

Quote:
In the middle 19th century, a nostalgic interest in pre-Cromwell Christmas traditions swept Victorian England following the publications of Davies Gilbert's Some Ancient Christmas Carols (1822), William B. Sandys's Selection of Christmas Carols, Ancient and Modern (1833), and Thomas K. Hervey's The Book of Christmas (1837). That interest was further stimulated by Prince Albert, Queen Victoria's German-born husband, who popularized the German Christmas tree in Britain after their marriage in 1841, the first Christmas card in 1843, and a revival in carol singing.[7][8] Hervey's study of Christmas customs attributed their passing to regrettable social change and the urbanization of England.[8][9]

And Lizzie von Vindsor has continued the Kraut Christmas with the very un-British tradition of exchanging presents on Christmas Eve. Next they'll have us chopping down small trees and dragging them indoors!

There's a Sicilian woman at work, when I say Sicilian she actually hails from the South Side of Chicago, who has seven types of fish on xmas eve. Apparently some sort of Southern Italian tradition.

So many christian countries and so many traditions.

Not that I argue with this woman. After all I don't want to wake up sharing my bed with a horse's head.

When has being Sicilian(-American) been a race?

Of course what you are trying to accuse me of is stereotyping foreigners, which is indeed true for a joke. Her family, while not involved in crime, did have some interesting dealings with Al Capone back the day. Made for an interesting conversation. However the woman in question has no connection to organized crime at all.

I made the quip as a joke regarding my sincere fear of organized criminals, not that I discriminate against this woman in any way (or harbor any ill will to decent hard working Sicilian Americans from the South Side of Chicago)....

However you've been deleted from the forum.

Yay!!!!
