The gun used was the FN FAL, of which a British made variant - the L1A1 Self Loading Rifle (SLR) was the British armed forces main infantry weapon from 1954 to 1994. I'm sure this will be well known to many Mail readers.
So on the one hand we have the nasty Commie made Kalashnikov AK47, a favourite of the Taliban and nasty 'Muzzie Rag-heads' in general, on the other we have the weapon used by 'our boys' for 40 years.
Which version is going to most tickle the genitals of the Mail readers?

I notice most of the comments seem to focus on either the gunman's North African origins, or how gun crime in Britain would completely disappear if guns were more easily available.

The only way that the image links from here could be of any benefit is in their SEO rankings and, given the amount of external content that links in, "our" links would only represent a bazillionth of a percent. Web advertising is sold on either page views/impressions or, increasingly, on click-throughs so, unless we are linking to a page in its entirety, it makes no difference.

Even when we do link to full content, each visit is worth probably only a penny (tops). A penny too much? Yes. But it is also an advertising penny that yields no return on investment. If our Hibernian kommrades are correct and many mickle does indeed make a muckle, those advertisers would ultimately get pissed off.

It's been a while since I grazed those pastures so I am happy to stand corrected if needs be.

On a pedantic point, most "AK-47s" are not AK-47s at all. The vast majority of Kalashnikov assault rifles in use around the world today are actually AKMs or even AK-74s.

I'll get me sad, gun-spotting coat...

I love Weegee's work. It is of its time, of the film noir, of the gritty New York we all fantasised about. There is a dark talent in his pictures. These are comments, not simply voyeurism.

Silly me, there I was thinking that the Mail had published gory images for their brain dead readers to gawp at when all the time, they just wanted to showcase the brilliance and artistic merit of Weegee's images.
I'll never learn.

He is a major photographic figure, pretty iconic to a generation of realité snappers.
He worked the crime desk to pay the bills. He reflected a violent side of a pretty raw city.

What's your beef?

"Cross Lady" feels exactly the same as I do:

I didn't watch the latest snuff movie offering from the DM. :-( Surely the report does not require the footage.

No. I'm questioning that the Weegee images came into that category. I asked you what your problem was with them.

No problem with them at all, I also admire his work...I'm just amazed that anyone would actually think that the Mail published the selection they chose to with anything in my mind other than to feed the majority of their reader's appetites for daily gore and death.
