Going for red arrows into at least 4 figures here:
Quote:
Isn't this simply a statement of the obvious? It is relatively easy to move, say, a clerical officer sideways into another clerical job, and if you know there are clerical jobs available in another department or another part of the country then as a matter of law the employer has a duty to discuss these with employees they are thinking of making redundant. However, if you are cutting down the number of soldiers as a whole, the reality is that there will be no alternative soldiering jobs to go into, and therefore in law the employer has no duty to discuss a transfer to a job that doesn't exist.

People are always calling for our 'boys' to be brought home... but do they expect tens of thousands of men to sit on their arse and get paid £20k a year?
When they come back, they will no longer be needed. Not any time soon I hope anyway.

On a side note... I'm still seeing people in the street and at work wearing poppy's believe it or not.

The next logical step is to deploy them against their "enemy within" - See the Mail Vs for suggestions.

Why is the civil servant tasked with allocating cuts or whatever, being targeted?

Why not the defence budget chiefs, i.e George Osborne?

He'd not last long in Helmand either - not that that is a measure of a decent person, although it seems that the Sun et al increasingly want to the make the world a manichean place, between the soldiers/anyone who loves and praises them endlessly vs the callow, evil scum who are either too afraid to be soldiers, or too afraid to profess undying love for them.

There's a car parked near my house that still has one of those giant dinner plate poppies pinned to the front.

There's one round the corner from my house which has had the same one for at least two years. Pretty much defeats the object.

Anyone remember those plastic red noses you used to be able to put on your vehicle? Generally, if anyone still had one on the front grille a month or more after red nose day, they were branded as a boor, a white van man, Essex boy or whatever (it was early 90s - fill in your own derogatory terms from the time). Or Engerlund flags after Our (other) Boys had been knocked out of the opening stages of whatever tournament they pissed all over?

Maybe one could argue that the poppy appeal is a slightly more worthy cause than either a bunch of hit and hope footballers, or keeping Lenny Henry in the public consciousness, but to me at least, it still smacks of the same things - laziness, and conspicuous 'caring', more out of a desire for attention than any genuine sentiment.

Not when the object is to show how much you care, 365 days a year.

I think I've mentioned it before but there's one I regularly see around which is so old it's faded to pink. Being that County Durham is not known for it's blistering sunshine, I suspect it may pre-date yours somewhat Shyamaz. :)

I occaisonally see a car in my town with one of them on, which is real commitment given that I don't think they're done that much any more.

Quite, I didn't think they made the car ones any more - and if that's the case surely they must be aware that people will notice?

It must be said though, the good thing about the red nose day items is that at least they are different every year, which forces people wishing to fit in with supporting friends or workmates into buying a new one each year at a set price - that was very clever of them.

Featuring covers of U2 and Coldplay. Aren't you just itching to rush out and buy 10 copies?

I imagine a steaming self-congratulatory wank piece from the Mail very soon.

Unless they decide to spin the BBC connection.
