I'm sure John Humphries just referred to Ritchie as "Littledong" when reviewing the papers this morning.

The question remains - how come TV and radio journalists seemingly managed to play by the rules? Ditto broadsheet reporters? How do France, Canada, the USA etc manage to square journalistic ethics and press freedom? What makes British tabloids so special that the rules and standards everyone else managed to adhere to, do not and apparently can not apply to them?

No assault on a free press Richard. The TV & Radio journalists, as well as those of the broadsheets, manage to go about their business without breaking the law. The "witch-hunt" is conducted against the handful of vile rags which used criminal practices for financial gain. What's wrong with hunting witches anyway? Let 'em burn I say.

If the police had gone after staff at the Telegraph following it's involvement in exposing MP's expenses or the Guardian after it exposed phone hacking Littlejohn's ramblings would make some sense, but largely speaking papers like the Sun have bribed police officers and broken the law to expose trivial stories about celebrities. Whilst it would be fine to offer up a public interest defence in exposing MPs cheating expenses and phone hacking I can't see how you can ever justify bribing a police officer to get confidential information or gossip about celebrities.

Kavanagh (and Littlejohn) both fell back on the old "but we've always done it" defence.

Face it guys, the party's over and the hall's being cleared.

I currently topping the best rated comments.

Finally journalists at the Sun are getting a taste of their own medicine. If News International had fully co-operated with the original investigation this could have all been cleared up years ago. Covering up past misconduct has created the situation we have now arrived at.

If you look at the worst rated comments it's amazing how many people unquestioningly side with Littlejohn - drinking the Kool-Aid as our US cousins say.

And I'm pleased to see that the two worst-rated comments come courtesy of Wally Toynbee.

Jeez. He's as topical as ever:
Quote:
The day it dawned on me that public spending might be horribly out of control was more than 30 years ago when, as a young industrial correspondent, I toddled along to a press conference called to discuss the annual report of the nationalised British Steel Corporation.
