Aside from the tragedy of the two deaths, there are some really depressing statistics in there...
Quote:
Ninety-eight per cent of young gay people hear the phrases "that's so gay" or "you're so gay" in school

Quote:
Ninety per cent of secondary-school teachers had witnessed children being subjected to homophobic bullying.

And yet I still feel that schools are just paying lip service to their anti-bullying policies and letting homophobic insults by. They don't feel it is really worth their time telling someone off for using "faggot" as an insult - just a small word, and not swearing - and certainly not worth an argument with a kid when they have better things to do with their time.

Yes, they are.
And the worst for letting it go were younger teachers - we even had to have a chat with one who was using 'gay' as a term for all bad things, in lessons. Didn't see anything wrong with it...

Mind you, it is so widespread that you have to be the sort of teacher who sees and hears everything, lets nothing go and follows everything up. That is a diminishing number in the present educational climate.

The first time I heard "gay" used in it's new generalised form was about 10 years ago.
A lad in one of my classes complained that his pc was "gay".
I admonished him for it, he was baffled because he "didn't call anyone gay" and subsequently complained to his course coordinator about it. I was subsequently questioned by my line manager as to why I was "picking on him", they wanted me to apologise to the student. It eventually took the Union to make them back down but left me marked out as a troublemaker.
As I said, that was ten years ago and the College's attitude did change as that usage became more widely known.

Was that about the same time that the term "gaylord" started being bandied about?

It previously was just the name of one or two Indian restaurants.

Yes, as far as I remember. I presumed that came from Gaylord Focker, Ben Stiler's character in Meet The Parents (released 2000 so the dates work).

It predates that movie. It was common parlance back when I was at school, and that was a good 15 years ago or so.

Used a lot at mine in the mid-late 70's.

Really?
I was at school then, I never heard it. Or I've just forgotten about it.........
I wonder where it came from?

Thinking about it, I'm not certain it was intentionally homophobic. It was definately in use though, normally folowing a mishap, like dropping a tray - "what a gaylord!" Suspected gays were reffered to as 'poofs', 'benders' or 'Bennies'. Thinking about it, my father played cricket for a team called 'The Gay Cavaliers' - as politically incorrect a bunch of chaps you could ever wish to meet...gawd I must sound like one of those old "I can remember when gay meant happy' types.
