Apparently Widdlecombe's maw has never yet gaped, not for man nor woman, nor beast of the field.

I just knew someone would make such a joke. :) Like many before me, I resisted the temptations of Widdecombe's stench trench.

Are you hinting that it was presented to you?

Nope. I was speaking figuratively.

Were you after an opening?

Melanie Phillips, Toby Young, sometimes Will Self if he is just on one of his things, pretty much anyone that's too insufferable. These are all on Radio 4 because I have an old styley radio in the kitchen with a dial, and it's hard to find stations on it. So it has two settings, off and on. I listen to way too much Radio 4 for my demographic. If someone gets too bad, I just shut it off. I also turn off Gardener's Questiontime because about five minutes into it, I invariably ask myself, "Just what the fuck are you doing?" I don't think I have ever shut off our digital radio just because someone annoyed me because I tend to listen to the stations where there isn't too much talk. Radio 6 and so on. Sometimes some of the classical stations. And, sadly, Radio 4 extra.

On telly, if someone is bad, I will usually say, "Oh it's this tosser" and usually won't change it. I will change it if it's Clegg. I may change it if it's Cameron unless there's opportunity for embarrassment. I actually caught the One Show thing, just because I was waiting for EastEnders, and thought it was weird the PM was on that weird little show and was justly rewarded. I will switch channels if the Go Compare guy comes on.

Particularly if they are specially sharpened cards in the shape of ninja stars.

I tend not to switch anything off because someone I don't like is on as I prefer to bellow long and largely illucid strings of words (mostly vulgar) at the TV/Radio/Computer like a puce-faced avatar of pure rage. This reaction can be mostly easily elicited by confronting me with evidence that Melanie Phillips is still alive and airing her unpleasent views in that enraging and deeply unpleasent voice of hers. More generally I find most of the economists, business "experts" and the like that get wheeled out on the news to belch odious toss about the necessity of austerity, job losses and so on unspeakably irritating.

I often switch over to Radio 4 extra when some insufferable tosspot is on Radio 4. They do some decent comedy repeats, although not all have aged well. Steptoe & Son is still decent but observational comedy that was ultra-contemporary in 1987 should have stayed in 1987.

Speaking of radio comedy - has anyone ever laughed at Milton Jones? I haven't the faintest idea how he got a show, let alone endless series after series.

Didn't mind him on Mock The Week, but Milton's House Of Rooms was dire.

Jeeeeebuz! BBC1 currently giving a free plug to 'Clever Dicks' with Widdybiddy on the sofa. Time for Radio 3.

One thing I like about Milton Jones on Mock the Week is he's not Stewart Francis. Of the two "one-liner" comedians I much prefer Jones.

Milton Jones provides, generally, family-friendly comedy in that show. Everyone else just tries to be vulgar or controversial, but Milton Jones almost consistently shows them all up. I can see why people get a bit fed up with him - I think a stage show would be a little too much - but personally I quite like his humour. His radio shows (specifically Another World...) tend to be quite funny, if somewhat surreal.

As for me...
Frank Skinner - He comes across as a bit slimy to me, but it was further impacted by things I've heard to do with him and his treatment of transgendered people. I saw one of his shows (Opinionated?) which had a transman in the audience, and I just wasn't impressed. I certainly won't be watching Room 101, especially with the amount of sheer BS thrown about on it. Fern Whatsherface slated sci-fi on it, making offensive(ish) generalisations and ignorant comments about the SFF community, not to mention the sheer irony of her slating sci-fi on a show which takes its name from a sci-fi book. The only episode of QI from the last series that I didn't watch was the one with Skinner in it.

Russell Howard - Jumped up little man-child. He thinks he's funny. He was. But his constant fall-back on "... it's like X crossed with Y" or "... as if X did Action Z with Y" jokes really grates with me, because often they're just ridiculous. On top of that, once Boyle left MtW, Howard tried to fill his shoes but completely failed to.

Frankie Boyle - Being a complete and utter *cough* is not big, clever nor funny. Grow the frak up.

Oddly enough, in the right circumstances I can stand Gyles Brandreth (almost exclusively on Just A Minute).

My answer can be summed up as follows...

Although after her performance on Room 101 last week I am sorely tempted to add Hilary "drag queen" Devey to this list.

Credit to Lorraine, there are those notorious hamburger shots of her out on the web (NSFW):
