I really ought to add something to the 'Mailite Code' about the importance of racing to the bottom at all times.
I don't quite follow that. Mailites make snap judgements based on the headline, which often has little connection with the actual "story". |Reading the whole thing is not at all important.
I should have explained better. Here's a couple of examples of what I mean by the 'race to the bottom' (it's got nothing to do with the fabled paragraph 19):
1. Pensions are under threat. The Mail constantly brings up the subjects of public sector 'gold plated' pensions, in stark contrast to (hardworking of course) private sector workers, who unless that have a private arrangement sorted out, are probably in line for zip. Rather than take this as a cue to campaign for better pensions across the board, the Mail encourages its readers to call for no pensions for anyone. If we can't have it, nobody should.
2. Britain is a very tolerant country when it comes to expression of faith. Ths angers some commentators, who point out that in countries such as Saudi Arabia, that level of tolerance would never be allowed. Rather than count their blessings that they live in such an open-minded and welcoming place, they call for Britain to become just as intolerant of other faiths than Christianity, as Saudi is of non-Muslims.
In both cases, rather than be glad for what we have, or strive for something better, there's this relentless pushing of the 'see how THEY like it!' line. I guess that the Mailite is miserable, and is only really happy (or should that be satisfied?) when everyone is as miserable as they are.
Hope that explains my use of words!
