Roger Helmer's defection to UKIP could open the floodgates

The decision of Roger Helmer, the Conservative MEP for the East Midlands, to defect to UKIP, represents a massive boost for Nigel Farage's party.

I've known Roger - and worked closely with him - for many years, so can vouch for the fact that he is a politician of conviction, ability and integrity. He is one of the most hard-working people I've ever met, but he is also a highly articulate advocate of the powerful case for this country being better off out of the costly, corrupt and anti-democratic EU.

If Daniel Hannan is the most convincing advocate of us leaving the EU then the Eurosceptics really are in trouble. Hardly anyone in the UK would even know who Hannan is.

No he's not. He's a pompous bellend. Spend five minutes reading his twitter feed and tell me otherwise.

Not so much opening the floodgates as a small leak from the cesspool.

As Iceland's former PM goes on trial, is it time Gordon Brown faced the courts for bankrupting Britain?

Liam Byrne, the man left holding the baby when Labour left office in May 2010, memorably said to his successor as Treasury Chief Secretary that all the money had gone. Evidently he found this funny. The rest of us did not and still do not.

We were - and still are - angry. Labour bankrupted Britain. But voters have short memories. It is up to the Conservatives to remind voters time and time again why the cuts (which barely scratch the surface) are necessary.

And one man is to blame for the economic mess in which Britain finds itself: Gordon Brown. J'accuse!

One for the Questions to which the answer is 'No' thread.

It's just fucking pathetic.

So what laws has he broken? Even if you want to believe he was incompetent (he wasn't), that's not illegal.

The one that prats tend to cite are those laid out in the Treason Act. Of course they've never read the act and only have the vaguest understanding of what "treason" is but that doesn't stop them going on (and on and on and cocking on) about it.

That old canard again.
It's a parliamentary tradition for ministers to leave jocular notes for their opposite numbers upon the change of government. Not sure how old that tradition is, but there's a clip of Jim Callaghan (on Parkinson?) reminiscing about the note Reginald Maudling left him when he became the new chancellor in 1964: "Good luck, old cock ... Sorry to leave it in such a mess." Callaghan said he looked around the office and thought "it didn't look too bad, then I examined the books."

It's another I/you/they.

I enjoy a bit of banter.
You engage in a spot of gallows humour.
They are cynically mocking us.

Lefties are humourless. That's the difference.
