Is he a case of postmodern ironical praise?

Pretty much. First time I came across him was in Human Traffic, where he plays your typical rave-casualty. Then came Football Factory (you won't like it) where he played a rough-n-ready yet loveable football hooligan, but the Marvin Gaye loving, rather than Halal-fearing variety. That pretty much laid the foundation for any role he's been approached for since, either self-deprecating hardman (Danny Dyer's Deadliest Men), or humorous druggie (Severance). He did break the rule in Borstal Boy however, (plays a Mockney), but as that came out quite a bit before any of the others (I think), it's the exception rather than the rule.

You must try and keep your ear closer to the ground if you're going to insist on this cyber-banter with the younger folk Malcolm!

Hmmm. I think I'll consider that carefully. But not necessarily today.

Can't be too careful.

I find him very watchable. I lived in Custom House for a month, must be why.

Mockney wannabe hardman, who plays the same role in every film and acts as a role model for EDL types.

He's just the latest in a line of those stretching back to the 60s (not the EDL bit obviously).

Fun game we play sometimes on IMDB. Take the name of any film or TV series, and add the words "...with Danny Dyer".

Hours of fun.

That was itself a running gag on The Now Show a couple of years ago. The main one I can remember was "Springwatch, with Danny Dyer"

This is well worth a look. Danny Dyer is "going on a journey" to confirm his belief in UFOs. Unintentionally hilarious.

Yeah, I reckon plenty of these lairy EDLers (who may well have turned to that group after having their vicious football 'supporting' antics clamped down on) see Dyer as some kind of English Übermensch.

Laugh at that.

Obviously for the Mail there's the total lack of polite young man in a sensible jumper who works in accounts, i.e. a living Alamy picture.
