They are prohibited from price fixing which aims to keep the price up. It's when one supplier undercuts the others that the consumer wins. But I suppose the principle that governments can't set prices applies, even though they do so in other areas through taxation and other wheezes.

Boris Johnson, having lobbied for the removal of the 50p tax rate, seems to be uncharacteristically reticent. Not really much to do with him.

Yet he's also saying he'll be good at lobbying the government to get more money for London.

Which is it?

Hence my stressing that it is a theory.
It would only work if there was political will to make it work.

Also Radio 4 are reporting that the drinks industry are mounting a challenge to the 40p per unit tax as they reckon it breaks EU competition law.

I'm surprised big Eric hasn't staged a revolt.

Until it's been tested in the courts it's all just pie in the sky!

I'm surprised nobody's played the "People will move abroad" card yet.

People will take cheap ferry rides to Calais to buy inferior forrin pasties (or tasty foreign cuisine).

Greggs were sceptical when Workfare campaigners urged them to look beyond initial issue at what this Gov. is like. Not now!

As Mrs Armsteen noted, their chicken pies are coming home to roost...
