The Gendarmes used to use similar tactics...

Similar sweep and clear tactics were used in 1966 in the run up to the world cup. 'Nipper' Read (of Kray fame) took the opportunity to shut down Soho's assorted clip joints, brothels and spielers while simultaneously giving the welcome wagon treatment to out-of-towners coming in to capitalise on the crowds. Nothing new.

An Aussie was telling me how, when they had the Olympic there, there was a tacit conspiracy of silence and everyone kept strictly schtum about things like traffic problems. Not much danger of that happening in London with our intrepid Mail reporters under strict instructions to dig up as much dirt as possible.

It's just wonderfuly Mailite though - here's an opportunity for the country, with thousands upon thousands coming here to spend money and see Britain at its best. And all they can do is moan.

The words 'cutting', 'nose', 'spite' and 'face' spring to mind.

Touts are already being clamped down upon at football matches, in what the police are openly calling a trial run for the Games.

Its rather amusing seeing them try to complain that foreigners have "our" tickets when of course the Olympics will be a flop that no one wants.

The chilling (and balaclava-clad) face of modern British policing: London siege reveals armed-to-the-teeth team preparing for the Olympic Games

nice reference to the Olympics.

Quote:
I was very impressed the way the Police responded. I was watching the story develop live on SKY news. There were reports of a man with gas cylinder bottles on this body and hostages in the building. How were the Police to know that this was not part of a bigger attack. What do DM readers suggest in the circumstances, send a couple of beat Bobbies with a megaphone to invite the offenders to the station for a quiet word. As in Birmingham there are criminals in London with guns who would like to engage the Police in a fire fight. Such attacks must be met with overwhelming force to protect the public.

I think Littlecock will have a few words on this, pretending to be at home here.

Inconvenienced on his way to the Waitrose Deli in search of egg, 19% pork and breadcrumb delicacies.

Well, if it's chilling, you'll want a balaclava, won't you?

Olympic security ban on your bottled water: But you can buy it in the stadium - at inflated prices

A series of test events took place at the Olympic Park in Stratford last week ahead of the London 2012 Games.

But many visitors were disgruntled to find that bottles of water, alcohol, hampers, picnics and cool boxes were not permitted inside the gates.

Sounds reasonable to me. I wonder why?
Quote:
A spokesman for Games organisers Locog said taking a sandwich in a backpack, for example, should not be a problem, but that a picnic hamper or cool box was ‘likely to be an issue’.

This, they said, was to prevent longer queues at venues while hampers were searched and because there was limited storage space beneath the seats.

See? I said there was a good reason.

i went to the test event and opening on Saturday. We took in our sandwiches and snacks bought in Waitrose Westfield. Also took in 750 ml drink bottles one each. 750ml is the limit on the instructions you get with the tickets. i was also finishing off a separate bottle of orange - about 250 ml left and the security guys - who were much friendlier than at heathrow let me also take that in. i don' t think the limit is 100ml from my experience.

And buried well down the article where the Mailites' red mist has prevented them from reading it is the fact that you're perfectly free to take empty bottles in and fill them up from water coolers for an extortionate price of .. nothing.

Try taking a picnic hamper, or drinks bottle into a league football ground. For that matter try getting any sort of food or drink into a cinema.

Isn't this (and the whole "Official xxxx provider so you can only buy our stuff") just another example of the wonderful free market capitalist system in action, and therefore an unashamedly good thing?

Oh no wait, things like that are only good when not affecting PLU.

I'm bemused by all the calls to boycott the Games. If you haven't got tickets by now then refusing to buy non-existent tickets is hardly a grand gesture, and you can bet that all those who have spent a fair whack on tickets aren't going to thrown them away in pique because they might have to pay £1.60 for bottled water. And you can put money on the fact that all those demanding a boycott were never going to go in the first place.
