Speaking as a lefty myself, I've read the Grauniad for about thirty years. Still think it's a good paper, despite its ill-advised embrace of the yellow scum at the last election.

Rusbridger should have resigned because of that.

The lifestyle sections of the paper, particularly in the Saturday Guardian and The Observer, really don't do it any favours - I know that stuff brings in advertising, but I'm pretty it doesn't reflect the lifestyles of the majority of the readersip.

Also, right-wingers hate people who aren't like them, so will have a go at their percieved enemies for being vegetarian, liking foreign films or doing the recycling - all things Guardian readers are (I imagine) more likely to do.

Yeah, I still like it - although budget constraints (from the mess I inherited) mean I usually buy i now.

Agree with Lord Brett though, the lifestyle sections make me sick. £200 t-shirts and where to buy a second home with wonderful schools and wondeful gastro-pub. Fuck off.

It's the best known of the leftward leaning papers.
In the days when I used to buy a dead tree paper (before the tinternet) I preferred the Independent.

Assuming that we all read the Guardian is about as accurate as assuming all Conservatives read the Telegraph.

In dead trees, I used to actually quite like the Times. I'm broadly left-of-centre, but consider myself a meritocrat, which neither side seems to be espousing particularly well at the moment. I think the Indy is probably the only paper I would still buy.

The Graun I find to have the best website for news, and as an uncultured gamer with little interest in theatre (unless it's the Reduced Shakespeare Company, at which point I'll be asking where I can buy tickets for a local show) and pop music, I find the culture sections to not appeal to me too much. I do occasionally flick through the culture galleries, though - some really nice clothes and stuff.

Indy I have no real thoughts on, but the website feels like it's from 1998.

The Tree Hugger and Yoghurt Knitter Chronicle is up its own arse a lot of the time - like what's been mentioned above about its Lifestyle section - the holiday/travel articles are atrocious. But... judging by the comments they're hitting the bullseye of their target audience of pretentious twats.

If the Indie had a better Website (like one that actually worked) I'd read that in preference. But since it hasn't for news the Guardie in the best option I find.

I get the Guardy on Saturdays only - and that's cos I always fancy a crack at the prize crossword. Being sat in the sunshine with a cuppa while solving clues is my idea of a perfect day.

As other people have mentioned, I'm another one who doesn't identify with the "House renovation - it's easy when you're a fucking rich architect (by Quentin Twatt)"* section.

What irritates me about the Graun is the way it can get itself too fixated on appearing trendy, such as with their whole Mad Men fetish they currently have.

The Guardian did steal a march on the other papers when they went online. In the early days it seemed to have the most user friendly website and it certainly seemed to be the first paper to archive their old articles which made it very useful as a teaching resource for me.

Times for me. I just grit my teeth when ploughing through the opinion pieces.

They've also got a Mad Men fetish.

Why do you say that? I've felt as betrayed, as have many others, by the way the LD said one thing and did the other, but you can't blame him for supporting them - as far as I'm aware he was acting on the same evidence we all were.

Now, their continued support (or, at least, lack of denunciation) of the LD party is another matter altogether.

It's not just the Guardianista thing that gets me, it's the idea we read nothing else. I buy the FT more than The Guardian.

For a particularly obnoxious example of this trope, see here:

http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/news/edwes ... riends-do/

West of course is always referencing lefty literature of which he has developed serious critiques.
