Spot on. Just like music - "I could play that". I don't care either that Hirst has a team making his work for him - just that the work is cobblers.

Prexactly.

But Hirst (or at any rate his hired help) DID spend many hours toiling to set up the shark in the tank. So it meets that criterion. I still have sympathy with Sewell's point. It really is just a shark in a tank.

he's as free as anyone to not like the shark, but "it's just a shark in a tank" is a poor justification, cause you can pull that trick for anything, critically it's up there with "it's rubbish because it is", and as a critic, he's kind of meant to do better than that.

Paxo on Newsnight on Hirst... "....his ability to part gullible rich people to part with millions of pounds for gimmicks"

With music it's not just saying 'Teenage Kicks is easy to play but it's a great pop record' - here's a piece that anyone with a voice and a tape recorder can could have made, but Alvin Lucier did and produced a stunning work. "Art" too, I'm sure.

(sorry, bit of a diversion!)

Paxo interviewing Hirst now. He does come over as a thicko ignoramus, but you do have to grudgingly admire the ingenious con trick he has pulled off to make millions from rich twats.

(Hirst, not Paxo).

You only need the bit of the You Tube URL after the = sign inside your You Tube tag.

Wondered when they'd get round to this approach.

oooh, so it's like that article the sun did about 5 years ago where they remade emin's "tent" (after the originaly was destroyed in a warehouse fire) for about £100 only...the same.
