He won't stand, because defeat would remind him that people (specifically: most people) don't agree with him. And he doesn't like that.

Also, hustings and debate would be an opportunity for a great deal of people to dismantle his profoundly stupid arguments without him being able to either censor them, walk away in a huff claiming to have won on some nitpicking side issue, or ignore the questioner on the basis it's an ad-hominem attack on him because he is the great Peter Hitchens - i.e. his entire debating repertoire would be useless because he'd be facing real questions from real people which he'd have to answer without being able to doctor the question or the outcome to suit himself. He doesn't like that either.

This is Peter Hitchens though, he wouldn't just reflect on it as most would and reach the natural conclusion that in fact contrary to what he believes he doesn't reflect a great silent majority, and that in reality most voters just don't share the batshit-mad right-wing views he espouses. For Peter, it would probably just feed into his belief that Britain is controlled by a left-wing conspiracy, and an electoral system that has been created to favour bland party-line followers over courageous, enlightened, fearless, free-thinkers like himself.

Oh he'd find an excuse, certainly - but from his behaviour in online debates you can see he really can't handle it when someone dismantles his arguments and does so in a reasonable and polite manner (which in turn makes his increased scrabbling around for technicalities to divert attention to and rudeness in the hope of provoking retaliation all the more obvious and silly). I'm sure he believes in himself, but I'm also sure on some level he is deeply insecure and cannot bear his opinions being shown up for being just opinions, rarely backed as they are by anything other than very awkwardly cherry-picked bits of data, if that.

He's basically a bully, and behaves like one - happy to throw his weight around when he knows he's safe to do so, completely turning to mush when out of his safety zone.

I broke with tradition today and read a copy of the MoS that had been left lying around at work, meaning that I chanced upon the aforementioned Hitchens' Bitchin'. I have a new theory that Hitchens may be part of the Liz Jones/Samantha Brick/Shona Sibary wind-up phenomena. I was roaring with laughter at his description of Cameron as a Left-Liberal and at what Hitchens says is his "instinctive leftism" on the major issues. WHAT THE FUCK?!!? I mean what planet do you have to be on to think that we have a left-leaning liberal government?

And this.

This happened in January but I've only just found it. A US based atheist blogger wrote a piece about Hitchens' claim that atheists reject god as they want to act immorally. Lots of comments along the lines of 'shame it was such an ignorant attack, and from the brother of Christopher Hitchens at that'. Pete actually appears in the comments, throws around further abuse and ad hominems, and gets it back in spades. The moderator tells everyone to play nicely but Pete just goes "noooo, leave the insults in there. It just shows I'm right as everyone is soooooooo horrible to me' and flounces off.

I get the impression that somewhere in his head Hitchens realises that he is close to the edge, and it scares him, so the extra crutch of a religious system of ethics is necessary, whereas for a person with a stronger grip on their psyche that wouldn't be needed.

I've just had a look at that. in one of his posts, Hitchens claims that he relishes argument. If that's true, how come I am almost never allowed to comment underneath his risible Mail articles?

And the first-born handicapped? That's just God being loving, we assume?

And the pregnancies that the body ends of its own accord, so early on that the woman didn't even know she was pregnant and thinks she just had a normal period (happens quite often in fact).

It always seems to be those with the least biology knowledge -even most basic- who think they know the most.

I don't think Hitchens is in it for the cash like most of his other colleagues. It must be hard to continually lie to yourself and still claim you are a decent person. Which is probably what makes him such an entertainer.

That is something that Dacre's arse licking, cock sucking bitch Littlejohn would never have to do as he will say anything to get his cash. Decency doesn't come into it for him. As long as he gets to see Mickey Mouse every day.

That blog is absolutely classic Hitchens - divert, insult, ignore, claim ad hominem attack when insulted back, run away claiming victory without ever answering anything.

He doesn't like debate at all. He's clearly terrified by it, given the lengths he'll go to to avoid it.
