Well we were all set to deliver to the great man but the guards with machine-guns wouldn't allow it. I guess that's a novel take on the 'no free newspapers or leaflets' notice you find at some letterboxes.

What says the leaflet?

Sounds pretty sensible to me. Normal security.
It applies to a lot of politicians and High Court judges (though not so much since the IRA decommissioned itself).
Try it at Baroness Thatcher's place and let us know what happens.

Can I have Narglefargle's address, please? And yours? There's some parcels I want to send you. No explosives, anthrax or hallucinogenics, no, certainly not.

Actually funnily enough I don't know. There are lots of campaigns going on in London at the moment. All of the parties are doing something because of the mayoral elections. My guess would be something to do with that. I might have a look later. I've still got the envelopes.

Would anyone notice if Nargle was on hallucinogenics?

I can't afford guards with machine-guns, but if I saw a bunch of right wing extremists trespassing on my property I would arm myself with whatever came to hand.

If you're an ex PM you're inevitably on the receiving end of regular threats from assorted extremists and nutters, a proportion of whom will certainly put those threats into effect given half a chance. In those circumstances you can see why you might be a tad reluctant to allow any stranger to walk up to your door and post things through your letterbox.

You mean just in case they tried to cause you an injury with their free market economics?

...regards the other stuff... I think I should point out I'm not complaining or surprised that Tony has armed guards outside the house.

That was my point.

I think Fozzy was just agreeing with you.

Also John Major and Gordon Brown. Presumably former leaders of the opposition and former cabinet ministers have some protection as well, though I'm not sure how far down the food chain that extends.

For a long time NI Secretarys had armed guards, even after leaving their post.

In the days before mobile phones I was behind a car in the back streets of Wimbledon when it caught fire. Seeing a copper sitting in a little hut in a front garden I ran (it was some years ago) up the path and called for him to radio for the fire brigade. He put his comic to one side (Green Lantern, I noticed with approval) and stood up, revealing his machine gun. I stopped running.

House belonged to a judge who had just sent some IRA terrorists down for life (or however long it was to the Good Friday agreement).

I looked out for him for several years, and he was always there. Or maybe it was one or more of his colleagues.
