Over half of secondary girls say that “girls are put off sport and physical activity because of their experiences of school sport and PE". According to a report by the Women's Sport and Fitness Foundation:
Quote:
Official figures show that just 12% of 14 year old girls are reaching the recommended levels of physical activity – half the number of boys at the same age. This is despite three quarters (74%) of girls saying they would like to be more active.
The report, available to download, also highlights the gender gap that emerges between girls and boys as they grow up. In Year Four of primary school, girls and boys are doing similar levels of physical activity. However, by Year Six girls are doing considerably less exercise than boys – a gap that widens as girls reach Year Nine of secondary school.
Among several recommendations, the report proposes "
making sure girls are not put off PE by the clothes they might have to wear (revealing gym skirts, for example)".
In the build-up to the Olympics, the tabloids will undoubtedly do their bit to stop the objectification of women who play sport, the Mail at the vanguard of course:

Interviews with the "girls" don't bog the reader down with tedious tactics talk:
Quote:
SHAUNA MULLIN, 27
On court ‘I don’t see a massive difference between what we wear and what the athletics girls wear. When we were playing in Thailand last October, the temperature on court was 50°C. I couldn’t imagine being in anything more than a bikini and sports bra.’

LUCY BOULTON, 26
Off court Together for over five years with fireman boyfriend Tristan, 32. ‘Does he like my bum? I think so, you’ll have to ask him! I don’t do any specific exercises to make it look good, but if you’re running around on the sand for four hours a day, it’s going to shape you up.’
Girls quoted in the WSSF report said that competitive sports made them feel "embarrassed", "judged" and "pressured". Why could that be?

If you women don't look like these girls, then you are fat. Yes, fat, because this is the proper appearance of a human female.

3 This isn't the Mail's first story about women's beach volleyball, although Britain has no chance of winning a medal in the sport. What could be the interest, then?
