Not a bad effort from Heffer this week, until the end where he starts whinging that the Tories need to return to their 'core' values of homophobia and other non-progressive views.

As the battered Tories put aside Lords reform and gay marriage to focus on the economy, here's the Queen's Speech Cameron SHOULD have written

PS: Hardly any of these bills I suggest would stand a chance of becoming law because of the resolute opposition of the Liberal Democrats to anything that smells of a Conservative policy. Given the state of the country, and the need for urgent action, that would seem to make the most compelling argument for the Prime Minister to end the Coalition and start being Tory again.

+1

Now let's see him cost those proposals of his, paste them into a manifesto and see whether even the nuttiest Tory will run it past the electorate.

Not only did they not win the election, they only got anywhere near because Cameron turned down the more Conservative policies (at least in public). "True Conservatives" fought the 2001 and 2005 Elections and were comprehensively thumped.

Scary thing is, a week or so ago I was talking to a Tory who believed that the reason her heroes were doing so badly at the moment was because "there's nobody in the media fighting our corner". When I asked her about the Mail, Express, Torygraph, Sun (if not for Cameron then certainly for a hard Tory attitude) etc, she said "Oh, but they don't really count!".

As I've said before, how does being nice to gays stop you from sorting out the economy?

I had a variation of Andy's conversation a while ago. I was informed by a Tory that The Telegraph is the only pro-Tory newspaper. The Mail, Sun, Express, Star are too working-class to count and The Times is damned by association with The Sun.

Didn't the elected mayor of Doncaster get unstuck on that very question (sort of)?

Why, yes he did. If you recall, he pulled funding for the Doncaster pride parade. People pointed out (including a radio interviewer) that the pride parade bought a lot of people into Donny, and they tended to park their cars in Doncaster car parks, go for meals and drinks and things in Doncaster after the parade was over, fill up their cars at Doncaster filling stations and so on. It was one of the busiest weekends for Doncaster business. And thickhead pulled the plug on all of it.

Mine was really paranoid about the BBC - apparently they all read the Observer and you can get fired if you don't agree with it, dontcha know? - she said it was "wall to wall anti-government propaganda". When I asked her if this was because as the ruling party with the power to affect people's lives in a way the opposition just don't have, the Tories should expect a tough grilling, she said that oh no, it wasn't just the news, it was the soaps (apparently all the baddies in Eastenders are white and English - she obviously missed out the bigoted meddlesome Muslim woman and the psychotic Asian doctor) and besides, times were tough so it was people's duty to support the government, just like they did in the war.

Yes, she actually said that last bit.

That was a great interview, wasn't it?

You don't know what it costs, you don't know what it earns, but you're banning it?

Not to mention that the most high-profile, long-running and arguably most thought-provoking (a term I hate using in relation to a soap but hey ho, if it's good enough for Grace Dent...) was domestic abuse committed by a Scotsman.

Did she say it before May 2010?

Back as early as the housees of Wessex (Anglo-Saxon) and Knytlinga (Danish) the kings have not been of English descent.
Richard III was of the house of Anjou.
