Seems to have made a very fair point, and got the woman's claim settled when it otherwise wouldn't have been.

Frankly, leaving valuables in a parked car is pretty daft, even if you do "hide" them under a coat.

I'm not denying that, he's just been a complete arse about it.

But I'm on the fence (no, not that kind of fence, I mean the wooden dividing one). It seems like a semi-reasonable precaution to me, although maybe not the wisest thing she'll have ever done, but how can they claim it was "in full view" if it was hidden?

Well, they nicked the coat that was in full view "covering" the handbag, so by doing so the bag would then have been uncovered too. However, it's far more likely that the thief simply watched the woman placing the bag into the car and just waited till she'd left.

It's hard to tell, exactly, as there's no context to the story. Was she just dropping something off at a friend's house, was she going into her house for the night, had she forgotten something? So on and so forth.

Seems as much a case of bad luck as it is being a little careless to me.

She was profoundly stupid, in the terms he explains to her. M&S have been very generous, despite her being in breach of her T&C.
I'd say that's a good piece of work by Mr Hazell - sometime the press (and possibly a little pressure) can work wonders. Good publicity for M&S as well.

Basically the same thing happened to a friend of mine and the insurance company didn't pay out. There's no point hiding anything in your car under a coat, as the coat was probably what the thieves wanted to pinch in the first place.

I expect he's well upset about that.

I've had to do dozens of chats with people who've left their valuables in view and had them stolen. It's a self-inflicted injury. Don't do it. To try to spin it any other way is just encouraging people into victimhood.

Never said it wasn't, but we don't know every detail (when do we ever?) so the "degree" to which it's her fault is questionable.

By that I mean if she hid it 'cos she'd only be 10 minutes (say, dropping something off) that's one thing, but leaving it in there overnight is another.
