I think Will Self, a few weeks/months ago on Question Time did have a semi-relevant point about this sort of stuff.

There's a lot more cars on the roads now (and a lot more roads for cars!), so it's much harder for kids to safely sojourn off on their lonesome like they used to. On top of that, we're much more aware of pollutants in water and so on and so forth, so it's less we're not letting kids do this stuff, but we're much more aware of the dangers out there PLUS the natural expansion and advancement of man has made certain things a lot more dangerous.

Thing is, the parents who want to chuck their kids into piles of broken glass (just like the good ol' days) will be the first to cry foul to a Major National Newspaper and pose with a mighty sadface if something happens to their little angels.

They've ran that on at least two previous occasions.

And with this comment.

I think it's entirely appropriate to say, "No shit, Sherlock".

The scene of an accident in 1935. Information with the photo reveals a car stolen by joyriding children crashed into a lawyer's car, killing him

This is my favourite one. Not only does it fly in the face of their constant "elf 'n' safety is bad" rhetoric (as do many of the photos of horrifically mangled wrecks), but it turns out the car was stolen by feral joyriding yoofs. That's Teh Olden Dayz for you, when children knew their place and respected their elders, and everything was good clean fun.

So many unanswered questions - Why would insurance for a 54-year-old be £1000, unless he has a very powerful car, or a very poor driving record? Why would anybody taking a large sum of cash from a bank not put it in an envelope then into their pocket? And who, in this day and age, pays a premium in cash - debit card, cheque, or direct debit are surely all more secure forms of payment?

My mum used to work in insurance and had a few elderly customers who always paid in cash because they "didn't trust the banks."

Surgeon's assistant, miner and 'drug dealer': Census study reveals the bizarre summer jobs teenagers had in Victorian times

Typical DM research.
Quote:
The school leaving age in the 1970's was 15. It was younger in Victorian times. Those youngsters would not have been in summer jobs, they were their full time occupations.

The 1851 census was taken on 31st March. "Truth Is, South of There" is correct. These were NOT summer jobs.

Also, school wasn't compulsory in 1851.
